‘The Haunted Mansion’ (2003) scares up laughs

Halloween is right around the corner, so it’s a great time to start watching Halloween and horror movies, like “The Haunted Mansion” (2003) directed by Justin Simien.

In this movie there are things that I like and do not like, such as how there is a man and woman who Jim Evers (Eddie Murphy) is helping sell their house, and they are quite annoying. They sing and keep pushing Jim to drink and do not stop talking while Jim is trying to get them to sign a paper so he can get home to his wife. In the movie, Jim, Sara (Marsha Thomason), Megan (Aree Davis), and Michael Evers (Mark John Jefferies) decide after months on top of months of working as real state agents to go on a trip to the beach. The day before they leave for the beach, they get a call to help sell a big mansion.

This movie has some odd parts, but I do like that Jim Ever is very funny and a big jokester. Even in bad times he makes jokes and sometimes laughs. He is my favorite character because he is a funny and chill guy. I also love the daughter, Megan, because she is a bit of a jokester like her father, such as in the beginning of the movie Michael was too scared to kill a spider that is crawling around in his room and on his window, so when Jim tries to help and get him to be man enough to kill the spider, Megan gets tired of Michael being a baby and grabs the magazine Jim was holding and kills the spider herself.

There are a couple unnecessary scenes in this movie, like how the Evers family is a real estate family. I am not sure how I feel about that. I feel as if it is a little odd they are real state agents, seeing in how this movie is supposed to be kind of scary and frightful. Also, when Megan is supposed to be acting scared of the dead that has woken up from the cemetery, you can tell that it is fake and she isn’t acting scared very well.

If you like movies that are frightful and comedic, then I highly suggest watching this movie. If you do not like movies that include singing, magic, scares, and comedy, then I do not recommend watching this movie. You would probably be wasting your time and would not like it. Although, you may not like those types of movies if you do watch it you may surprise yourself and end up liking it. When I pick apart this movie piece by piece and analyze every bit of it, I end up finding things I hate and things I love, but altogether I like this movie a lot.

I give this movie a 4.5 out of 5 star rating because from watching and paying attention to every detail, I find a lot of things I like about this movie and not very many things I dislike. But this is a Disney movie that was made for a younger-aged audience, so it is not as scary as a normal horror movie people would watch, but it’s pretty good.
