Sequins, spotlight, and Swift: ‘The Life of a Showgirl’

Taylor Swift’s new album has hits and misses

On October 3, 2025, Taylor Swift came out with a new album, “The Life of a Showgirl.” Taylor Swift just recently got engaged, so I wasn’t expecting a super heartbreaking album. This was an upbeat-pop album that had a lot of cheesy and “millennial” lyrics.

This album opens with the song “The Fate of Ophelia,” (my personal favorite) which is super fun and happy. Some background information about this song is that it references William Shakespeare’s tragic play “Hamlet.” Ophelia and Hamlet are young lovers who, because of familial and societal pressures, don’t stand a chance together.

Another one of my favorite songs on this album is track 12 “The Life of a Showgirl (feat. Sabrina Carpenter).” I really enjoyed the vocals in this songs and the lyrics weren’t too cringe. Taylor Swift said, “It’s a song about meeting one of your idols and instead of being what you thought they’d be, they warn you against following in their footsteps because they want to be honest with you about how hard this industry is. And you do it anyway.”

Track five, “Eldest Daughter,” was a song that I was very disappointed in. I had such high hopes for this one and it did not deliver. I thought the choice of lyrics was not good and I do not enjoy listening to it.

After I listened to this album a couple of times, I would rate it a 4/5. Like other albums by Taylor Swift, I don’t really enjoy them during the first listen, but now I love it.

I would recommend this album to pop-music listeners, millennials, and of course people who love Taylor Swift.
