'Prizefighter': a Folk Masterpiece

Mumford and Sons, a folk rock band, released their 6th studio album February 20, titled “Prizefighter.” This album features Chris Stapleton, Hozier, Gigi Perez, and Gracie Abrams, all very high profile artists that add impressive depth to this already amazing album.

This album poses themes of regret looking back and hope moving forward, as well as spiritual themes and implications that Mumford and Sons consistently includes. And impressively, this album was recorded in only 10 days.

Mumford and Sons are consistently a very retrospective and reflective band, and their songs consistently leave you in awe and an odd feeling of nostalgia. Prizefighter is no different, hitting those previously stated themes of regret and hope in the same way. This album blends the classic intimacy of the banjo with their introspective songwriting, posing songs with vulnerability, self reflection, and intimacy, even feeling like there are varied perspectives in the features. This album feels like hitting rock bottom and looking up. Even just paying attention to the lyrics, you can see the full perspective of life in general. Really, it’s impressive.

Marcus Mumford, the lead singer of the band, described this album as the “crystalization” of the band, and said that this is the best music the band has made. And, honestly, I think this is their best album.
