Anyone would love romcom ‘Anyone But You’

Spoilers ahead!! The movie will be explained in detail, so if you do not want to get the movie entirely spoiled skip the third paragraph.

“Anyone But You” is an iconic romcom (romantic comedy), directed by Will Gluck that is to die for. It begins with the main character Bee, who is played by Sydney Sweeney, running into a coffee shop because she urgently has to pee. The worker tells her only customers can use the restroom. This is when Ben, played by Glen Powell, steps in when he is up to order calling Bee his wife, asking what she wants him to order for him. Bee is flattered that a handsome guy would do such a thing for her. The two end up walking around the city together before going back to Ben’s place where they talk until they fall asleep on the couch. The next morning, Bee wakes up first and decides to flee the scene, and on her walk home she calls with her sister Halle telling her about the great night. Her sister asks her why she left before she woke up, and when Bee runs back to reunite with Ben she overhears him telling his best friend Leo that he “couldn’t get her to leave soon enough.” Bee is distraught and leaves, but she doesn’t know that Ben did not mean it and only said that so Leo didn’t think a cool girl like Bee left him.

Six months later at a local bar, the two run into each other and find out that Ben’s best friend, Claudia is marrying Bee’s sister, Halle. The two exchange harsh hostile words. Soon after the encounter they all get on a flight to Australia for the wedding. The wedding party all must stay in a house together. Ben and Bee do not want to ruin the wedding week, so they decide to fake a relationship. This also would benefit Ben because his ex-girlfriend that he still has heart-eyes for is also staying at the house and in the wedding. Their relationship is up and down, they seem like they are becoming friends but then get into an argument. When finally at the dress rehearsal, the two are reenacting the iconic “Titanic” Jack and Rose scene, when Bee falls into the Sydney harbor. Ben immediately jumps in after her even though he cannot swim well. The two swim to a buoy while waiting for the rescue helicopter, and really start to show their true feelings for each other. The helicopter comes and sends down harnesses for them to put on, and Ben is obviously scared of heights in this scene. Bee begins to sing his “serenity song,” which is the classic hit “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. Ben didn’t know how she knew this song, but it was because she overheard it playing in his headphones on the airplane.

The next day is wedding day, and the two get in a fight that morning. At the wedding they do not talk. Ben is dancing with his friends when his ex-girlfriend asks to dance. He says yes, and she leans in to kiss him. She barely grazed his lips before Ben backed away when he realized Bee is who he loves and he does not want this old fling to rekindle. Bee see’s the kiss from a distance and leaves the wedding in tears. She goes to the opera house in Sydney to watch people and calm down. Ben notices she was gone and immediately knows where she fled to due to a previous conversation the two had shared. Ben needs to get there the fastest he can, so he jumps into the ocean off a short cliff so a helicopter can get him and drop him off in front of the opera house. Bee is shocked when she sees his arrival. Ben says how he couldn’t find a moving train to jump off of, so this is the best he could do (Bee’s dad told him that true love is jumping off of a moving train to get to that special person). The movie ends with the couple dancing at the wedding when “Unwritten” begins to play, and everyone sings along to it.

The direction was great. Every line purposeful and entertaining. There were so many little details that connected throughout the movie. There were no questions I had about the plot, every detail was covered. The director did a fabulous job casting characters for this movie, they all had such great chemistry with one another. It was the perfect amount of romance and comedy. The movie did a wonderful job of bringing light back to the song “Unwritten” and I have listened to that song at least 40 times since I saw it a few days ago. It is even trending on TikTok for people to make a short video screaming to that song and saying “Us after watching ‘Anyone But You.’”

I absolutely loved this movie. It is rated R due to “language throughout, sexual content and brief graphic nudity.”

I easily would rate it 5 stars. It was the best movie I have watched in years, and I have never laughed so hard at a movie. I cried tears of sadness and tears of joy. It was so enjoyable and made me genuinely happy while watching it. In my opinion, the movie had absolutely no flaws. Everything was perfect. I am counting down the days until it comes out on streaming services so I can watch it again!

On another note, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell have the internet going crazy with the chemistry they have outside of the movie together. Sparks were flying in their press interviews.
