On Saturday, April 12 the Corry Beavers baseball team hosted the Warren Dragons at the Columbus Ballpark. Senior Lewis (Roo) Hellyer starts on the mound for the Beavers throwing to Senior Karson Chamberlin as usual catcher Wesley Kurelowech is recovering from an injury. Freshman Jeremiah Johnson playing third base, Junior Kamdyn Moon at short-stop, Junior Wyatt Swan playing second base, Senior Jacob Gantz at first base, Sophomore Carson Braswell playing in left field, Spotlight Player of the game Junior Tucker Jackson will be out in center field and Senior Aiden Trask in right field.
Warren’s starting catcher Elijah Snyder leads off the game for the Dragons with a pop up towards right field, Swan catches the fly ball to secure the first out for the Beavers. Hellyer strikes out the second batter securing the second out for Corry. A walk allows the Dragons to get their first runner, Roo ends the top of the first inning with a strike out. The bottom of the first inning starts off with lead off batter Karson Chamberlin, Chamberlin hits a hard ground ball to Warren’s second baseman, with a wild throw to first Chamberlin secures a lead off single for the Beavers. Karson successfully steals second, getting himself in scoring position. Moon gets walked as Chamberlin steals third, a wild throw from Snyder enters left field which allows Karson to score (1-0). Moon steals second, beating out Snyder’s throw as Swan is in the batters box. Swan strikes out swinging, giving the Beavers their first out of the winning with Moon in scoring position. Kamdyn steals third as he beats out another one of Elijah’s throws, as Jackson is at bat. Jackson hits one right back to Dragons pitcher Felix Valencia, getting an RBI as Moon comes in to score (2-0) with two outs in the first inning. Braswell hits a high pop-up that Snyder catches to end the first inning.
Hellyer walks the Dragon’s first batter Broc Bryan, giving them a runner on first as their pitcher Valencia enters the box. Valencia hits down the right field line, advancing Broc to third base as Felix stays at first. Warren’s right fielder Colin Zdarko enters the box and Valencia’s pinch runner steals off the first pitch, giving the Dragons runners at both second and third base. Hellyer walks Zdarko bringing Zane Carlson to the plate with zero outs and bases loaded. Carlson drives one deep into left field over the head of Braswell, bringing Bryan and Valencia’s pinch runner in to score which ties up the game 2-2 with Zdarko on third and Carlson on first. Jacob Franklin pops one up into right field, Trask makes the catch as Zdarko tags up to run into home. Trask’s impressive throw comes in a second too late as Colin is safe at home, the Dragon’s being in the lead by just one run (3-2). Warren comes back to the top of their lineup as Elijah Snyder re-enters the batters box, Snyder hits a high fly-ball out to left field where Braswell secures the catch. The Beavers end the inning with a double play as Braswell throws the ball to Swan who fires it to Gantz back at first base to beat out Carlson.
The bottom of the second inning starts with Jacob Gantz up to bat, Gantz strikes out swinging. Trask takes a hit, getting himself a free base as Roo enters the batters box with only one out for the Beavers. Hellyer hits a hard grounder into right field, advancing Trask to second. Johnson strikes out swinging, bringing Chamberlin into the box with runners on first and second with two outs. A wild pitch allows both runners to advance, Chamberlin gets walked making bases loaded as Moon approaches the plate. Kamdyn gets walked as well, bringing Aiden in to score the game ties again at 3-3. The second inning ends with a strike out from Swan.
The third inning starts with Shene batting for the Dragons, hitting a fly ball out to Center where Tucker makes the catch getting the first out for the Beavers. Carter Cochran gets walked, bringing Wyman to the plate. Wyman hits to Swan at second, Swan throws to Moon getting Shene out. Moon throws to Gantz at first to secure the double play which ends the top of the third inning. Tucker Jackson starts off the bottom of the third inning with a hit deep into right-center which was caught by Zdarko, getting the Dragons their first out of the inning. Braswell gets walked bringing Gantz up to bat. Carson safely steals second, Gantz strikes out swinging. Corry has a runner in scoring position and two outs as Trask takes his turn at the plate. Trask gets a free base, Roo Hellyer hits an infield hit to second which ends the third inning.
Broc Bryan leads off the fourth inning with an infield hit to Moon, Moon makes the throw to Gantz getting the first out for the Beavers. Valencia rips a hard grounder to short, Moon stops it but Valencia beats out the throw. Colin Zdarko hits a hard fly ball to third, Jeremiah pulls off a quick catch but is unable to get the out at first. Chamberlin tags Zane Carlson on a drop third strike to end the top of the fourth inning.
The bottom of the fourth inning starts with Johnson at the plate. Johnson gets walked which brings the Beavers back to the top of the line-up. Karson with a pop-fly to Franklin at second, which is caught giving the Dragons their first out of the inning. Johnson successfully steals second on the first pitch to Swan, setting himself up in scoring position. Swan hits an infield fly ball which drops as Warren’s infield is unable to make the catch. Swan is safe at first as Jeremiah stays at second and Kamdyn steps into the batters box. A wild pitch allows both Johnson and Swan to advance bases, giving Moon runners on both second and third with a 2-0 count. An impressive snag by Warren’s second baseman Jacob Franklin gives the Dragons their second out. Jackson walks, which brought Braswell to the plate with bases loaded and 2 outs. Braswell gets walked, which brings Johnson in to score (4-3). The Dragons switch their pitcher from Valencia to Charlie Blum. A wild pitch to Gantz allows Moon to score, advancing Jackson to third and Braswell to second. Gantz walks, loading the bases once again for the Beavers as Trask steps up to the plate. Trask hits a hard grounder up the middle, it enters center field which brings Tucker in to score. Hellyer gets hit on the first pitch, taking the free base which brings Braswell in to score, Gantz to third and Trask to second. Johnson strikes out swinging to end the fourth inning with the score of 7-3.
The fifth inning begins with Jacob Franklin up to bat, Franklin hits deep into left field. Braswell secures the catch getting the Beavers their first out. Snyder hits a ground ball to Johnson at third, Jeremiah makes the throw to Gantz. Brady Shene hits a ground ball straight to Jeremiah, the throw is good to end the top of the fifth inning. The bottom of the inning starts at the top of the line-up for the Beavers. Chamberlin hits a hard fly ball, the Dragon’s short stop makes a diving catch to get the first out of the inning. Kamdyn hits up the middle, getting a single as the ball enters into center field. Moon steals second on a passed ball behind the plate. Swan hits a hard grounder into right field, bringing Kamdyn in to score as Wyatt gets to second. Jackson hits a grounder to the Dragon’s second baseman, getting out at first but advancing Swan to third. Braswell hits one into left field allowing Swan to score as the ball drops. Jacob Gantz gets a hold of one, sending it out into right field. Good communication from the Dragons allows a catch which ends the fifth inning with the score of 8-3.
The sixth inning starts with Carter Cochran at bat for the Dragon’s, Hellyer walks Cochran. Wyman hits shallow into right field, Swan secures the catch getting the first out for the Beavers. Hellyer walks Bryan on a full count. Hellyer then walks Kyle Dippold, Dragons have bases loaded when Coach Cirigliano brings Wyatt Swan into pitch after Roo Hellyer pitches a great five and a half innings. Trask comes in to play first as Gantz switches to second and Hellyer goes out to right field. Colin Zdarko strikes out looking, giving Corry two outs as Bradey Chase approaches the plate. Chase hits one to Moon at short, Kamdyn makes the throw to end the top of the sixth inning (9-3).
The bottom of the sixth inning begins with Trask at the plate. Aiden hits one in between the short stop and third baseman, getting a single as his hit enters left field. Jackson Lathrop goes in as a pinch runner for Trask. Lathrop tries to steal second, but is unable to beat Snyders throw. Roo hits to short, beating out the throw and gets to advance to second as the ball bounces out of the field. Johnson takes his turn, hitting one right into left field. Hellyer advances to third and Jeremiah stays at first. Karson strikes out looking, which gives the Dragons two outs with runners on first and third. Roo steals home as a wild pitch gets past the catcher, Johnson steals second. Another wild pitch allows Johnson to steal third. Moon strikes out swinging to end the sixth inning with a score of 10-3.
The seventh and final inning begins with Jacob Franklin at the plate for the Dragons. Franklin strikes out swinging, which gives the Beavers the first out of the inning. Elijah Snyder takes his turn at the plate, Snyder strikes out looking which secures the second out. Shene hits one towards short, Swan takes control and makes the throw to Gantz to end the game.
The offensive player of the game and Player of the game went to Lewis Hellyer and defensive play of the game went to Wyatt Swan who took part in both double plays.
