Friday, May 15, was Decision Day, one of the most exciting events of the school year. Starting at 1:30 p.m. in the new gym, seniors from Corry High School gathered to announce their college, military, or career choices for the next chapter of their lives.
The event was full of celebration as students shared their accomplishments and plans with classmates, teachers, and family. The whole high school along with family members were invited to watch Decision Day as the seniors were called across the stage while sharing their future plans.
For student athletes, Decision Day brought more excitement, as it also marked signing day. These athletes have spent countless hours practicing, competing, and balancing academics, and Friday their hard work was celebrated publicly. Among them, Blake Cook, Gavin Kent, Marleigh Martin, and Bynley Watrous will continue their track and field careers at Mercyhurst University. Keaton Frisina is headed to Washington & Jefferson for football, while Steven Willis and Marcus Meredith will represent Penn State Behrend in wrestling. Mahra Goodwill will play softball at the University of Mount Union, and Shay Linden will compete in track and field at Grove City College. Whether on the court, track, or field, these students are celebrating not only their athletic accomplishments but also the exciting opportunities that await in college.
Decision Day featured guest speaker and Corry High School alumnus, Nick Leofsky, Vice President of the Corporate Risk Office at Erie Insurance. Leofsky delivered an inspiring speech emphasizing that it’s okay to change your plans regarding school or athletics, but it’s crucial to always do your best and maintain strong grades in order to succeed. He also highlighted that even if you don’t consider yourself the “smartest” student, a strong work ethic can take you far. This message is mirrored in Nick’s successful career and position at Erie Insurance.
As Decision Day came to a close seniors were reminded that this milestone reflects years of effort and growth. The underclassmen saw firsthand what dedication can achieve. The excitement of the day was a spotlight on every senior and how far they have come to get to their future decisions.
