“Colossal” is a 2016 movie directed by Ignacio “Nacho” Vigalondo. The plot follows a failed writer, affected by alcoholism, named Gloria (Anne Hathaway). Gloria’s boyfriend Tim (Dan Stevens) had enough of her behavior and kicked her out of his New York home. She decided to move back to her childhood hometown. There, she found her childhood friend, Oscar (Jason Sudeikis), who was now running his late father’s bar. Gloria started working at the bar and stayed after hours with Oscar’s friends, Joel (Austin Stowell) and Garth (Tim Blake Nelson).
Elsewhere, in Seoul, a city in South Korea, each morning at 8:05, a reptile-like monster, would form from clouds and terrorize the city. Gloria found out that each morning, at the exact same time, she’d end up at a nearby park. Later she finds out she is the monster, subconsciously controlling it from the park. Several times she accidentally killed hundreds of people. Oscar finds out he also had a figure in the city. Instead of a monster, it was a robot.
One night, Gloria stayed with Joel, upon watching the television, both found out that Oscar was taunting the city of Seoul. Quickly rushing over to the playground where they found Oscar and Garth. Oscar became jealous of Joel, feeling that something between him and Gloria was happening. He took this not lightly, having Gloria slap him.
Later, it is revealed that as kids, Oscar destroyed a diorama of Gloria’s – being the city of Seoul – because of jealousy. This angered Gloria, summoning lightning that struck her and Oscar, as well as their toys, those being a monster and robot. Oscar quickly began to manipulate and blackmail Gloria so that if she left town, each morning he’d rampage over Seoul. The next morning, Gloria took a trip to Seoul, seeing the robot from the town, as her monster appeared at the playground. She grabbed a hold of Oscar, and flung him, leading to the disappearance of both creatures.
Overall, the movie was really good. Even though the first few minutes are just the same thing over and over (Gloria falling asleep due to alcohol), the movie gets better. The plot of having one of Gloria’s closest friends secretly always being jealous of her and using her for power is a big twist.
The emotion in the movie is fairly well done, with sadness, anger, loneliness, and happiness being the main four emotions. Throughout the movie, Gloria tends to itch herself on a certain spot upon her head, a draw back to the accident. This movie also shows that with Gloria’s character being failed with all miss happens and her dealing with the problem of alcoholism, with her having to further deal with the monster and Oscar brings a lot of pressure on her. Yet, she still manages to keep going to put an end to things. The chemistry that Joel has for Gloria, with her still dealing with Tim, puts more pressure on her as well.
The actors did phenomenal work. Seeing Anne Hathaway in other movies, it’s very different to what she’s known for. Sudeikis was able to really bring out the character of Oscar, showing his two different sides of being sober and being drunk.
I would have to definitely recommend this movie, but viewer discretion is advised. The only thing I didn’t like was as I said, the beginning was pretty repetitive with it being the same thing multiple times. Other then that, I loved it.
