Mamma Mia! is a musical romantic comedy directed by Catherine Johnson. The film is based on her book from the 1999 musical from the same name. The film is deeply based on the songs of the popular ABBA group. The film has an amazing cast including Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Dominic Cooper, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, and Julie Walters. The plot of the movie surrounds a young bride-to-be, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and her journey to try to find her real father, by inviting all three potential dads (Brosnan, Firth and Skarsgard) to her upcoming wedding.
Most of the scenes were filmed on small islands, Skopelos and Skiathos, in Thessaly, Greece. Most of the film was shot between August and September of 2007. In November of 2008, Mamma Mia! became the fastest selling DVD of all time in the United Kingdom. it sold over one million copies on the first day of release, breaking the record previously held by Titanic. In the United States the DVD made over $30 million on the first day of release. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 16, 2008.
The film has such an entertaining and light-hearted plot that instantly captures the viewer’s attention. When Sophie finds Donna’s old diary and discovers that there are three men that could potentially be her father, or when she invites them to her wedding without her mother knowing. When Donna finds three of her lovers on her island, her dumbfounded reaction follows after the discovery. Or the surprise proposal at the end of the movie. There are many different plot points that catch you off guard, or are so goofy and comical.
The film is straight perfection, if you are someone who enjoys musicals. Light-hearted comedies, and the Summery feel that comes along with watching the film. If you like Pitch Perfect, High School Musical 3, The Princess Diaries, or Grease then you will enjoy Mamma Mia!. Not only is the film extremely entertaining but there is also an underlying meaning. The film shows viewers that sometimes it’s okay to take a chance on taking a risk in order to achieve your dreams.
The film is rated PG-13 and is available to watch on HBO Max, Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home. There is also a second movie called Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again that I also suggest you take the time to watch. Overall, I rate Mamma Mia! a 9/10 as it is one of my personal favorite movies.
