The Mercyhurst Ethics Symposium, hosted every year in March, is a great experience for young students to learn about the wonders of ethics. Debating war, Robinhood scenarios, and the revolution of AI, the symposium touches on topics that are looked at as “sensitive” in a normal setting.
Students started in Mercyhurst’s auditorium, with a quick seminar on what the symposium was trying to teach. They went over rules of ethics and some short free response open mic questions for students to answer.
After the opening seminar, students went to classrooms to discuss individualized topics such as the Robinhood scenario and AI. Following the classroom work, students went to lunch in the cafeteria for 30 minutes and then went back to the auditorium for one final open mic discussion before leaving.
Multiple students, when asked, said that the symposium was a great experience and that they wished they could come back.
One student, however, said that he thought all the arguing was stupid, so if you do not like debating you should not go.
Overall, this is a great experience for young students to learn about ethics, discuss sensitive topics and get a feel about how college feels from a big lecture to a small classsroom.
