[Updated] The ASVAB postponement causes stress and frustration for students

[Update: The ASVAB has been rescheduled to Friday November 21.]

On October 10, certain students in Corry High School were signed up to take the ASVAB test, which is a government test provided by the Department of Defense and monitored by the US military. The test, however, was postponed due to the current government shutdown.

A budget dispute in Congress kicked off the government shutdown on October 1. Nobody knows for sure when the shutdown will end, so until then, all federal issues cannot be resolved until further notice. This has caused confusion and some panic not only among the US citizens, but specifically the schools.

I talked to Mrs. Audet, who was one of the main people responsible for taking care of the resources and preparation necessary for Corry students to take the ASVAB test. When I asked her about her opinion on the postponement, she explained how the shutdown has caused annoyance, especially when it came to a short notice to move it. Audet said that the person she was talking to about giving the test sent out an email about the postponement only a few days before. This was frustrating, considering all of the letters and parental notifications of the official postponement of the ASVAB.

This entire situation has been stressful for not only her, but also the variety of students who were scheduled to take the test. Most 11th graders were signed up to take it and also a few selected seniors.

This test allowed for a graduation pathway, which is stressful especially for seniors, because of trying to figure out a different solution for trying to graduate and getting into the military.

With everything going on, people hope the test is moved to an upcoming date and that make up for all the inconvenience caused by the cancellation.
