“The Maze Runner” is a dystopian post-apocalyptic inspired film that was released back in 2014, and will forever be one of my favorite mini movie sagas. This 3 film movie series follows the 16 year old protagonist, Thomas (Dylan O’brein) who wakes up in a rusty elevator, with no recollection of his memory. He learns that he has been sent to the center of a complex maze, where he meets the only female; Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), Newt (Thomas Brody-Sangster), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), and several other boys his age. Together they must fight their way out of this ever-changing labyrinth, all while they attempt to establish a society in what they call the Glade.
“The Maze Runner” was extremely fun to watch, and had me attached to several of the characters (Newt in specific) and their story arcs. One of the best things about this film was that it wasn’t as predictable as some of the other dystopian films I have seen before. There were plot twists that made it better, and the plot was highly enjoyable and suspenseful. Despite the fact that some parts were more difficult to watch because of the sadness and small amount of violence, I enjoyed them, and I believe these made the movie worth it.
This is rated PG-13 because of the violence and few disturbing images. I believe some of the scenes may be a bit much for children under 12, which is why I recommend this film to younger teens and up.
I give this movie a 5/5, because I could watch it several times without becoming bored. Since I am personally more of a fan of dystopian and end of the world movies, I rate it a 5. The story line was very well done, and the characters were developed just how they should have been. If you aren’t a fan of these types of movies, still give this one a shot, because you will enjoy it a lot.
