During my time with Rosie, my older brother introduced me to this song called Alyssa Lies released in 2007 by Jason Michael Carroll. The story told in the song is of a child named Alyssa who is abused by her parent(s).

My little girl met a new friend
Just the other day
On the playground at school
Between the tires and the swings

A young man’s daughter met Alyssa at their school’s playground and they became friends. This happened a few days before the story is being told.

But she came home with tear-filled eyes
And she said to me, “Daddy, Alyssa lies”

During their recess time the young man’s daughter, who’s name is left unmentioned, determines that Alyssa is lying about where her bruises are coming from.

Well I just brushed it off at first
‘Cause I didn’t know how much my little girl had been hurt
Or the things she had seen
I wasn’t ready when I said, “You can tell me”

The young man tells his daughter that she can tell him what is wrong. He was not expecting it to be so serious.

And she said
Alyssa lies to the classroom
Alyssa lies every day at school
Alyssa lies to the teachers
As she tries to cover every bruise

The daughter tells her father that Alyssa is lying to everyone about her bruises as she is trying to hide them.

My little girl laid her head down that night to go to sleep
As I stepped out the room
I heard her say a prayer so soft and sweet
“God bless my mom and my dad
And my new friend, Alyssa
I know she needs you bad”

The daughter is praying to God to thank him for her own parents and in hopes that he will help her new friend Alyssa out of her poor situation.

Because Alyssa lies to the classroom
Alyssa lies every day at school
Alyssa lies to the teachers
As she tries to cover every bruise

The daughter explains to God in her prayer why Alyssa needs his help.

I had the worst night of sleep in years
As I tried to think of a way to calm her fears
I knew just what it was I had to do
But when we got to school on Monday, I heard the news

The father is left unable to sleep after being unable to calm his daughter’s fears for Alyssa. The next day he figures out exactly what he has to do, that likely being to confront Alyssa’s parent(s).

My little girl asked me why everybody looked so sad
The lump in my throat grew bigger
With every question that she asked
Until I felt the tears run down my face
And I told her that Alyssa wouldn’t be at school today

Her father struggles to tell his daughter that Alyssa will not be coming back to school.

‘Cause she doesn’t lie in the classroom
She doesn’t lie anymore at school
Alyssa lies with Jesus
Because there’s nothin’ anyone would do

He tells her that Alyssa found a better place with Jesus and that she will not be coming back.

Tears filled my eyes
When my little girl asked me why
Alyssa lies
Daddy, tell me why
Alyssa lies

His daughter asks him why Alyssa lied. Which we did not get a response from him in the song.

Overall, a very emotional song for all people who were or know people that are abused by someone else. Not many songs stand the test of time, but this song is based on an issue that is still prevalent today.
