The Corry Area School District got new science classrooms in the middle and high school this past summer, and were finally ready to use at the start of the school year. Well, almost.
The rooms were clean with shiny counters, new benches, and new Smartboards in most locations. Students were looking forward to doing experiments and teachers were ready to try teaching in the new space. But even in a classroom built for learning, a few problems were waiting to be found.
Mrs. Carey really likes her new science classroom. It is bright, clean, and well-organized, and she seems happy to teach there. She has only had one small problem so far—the double sinks, since the faucet is in the middle, the water hits the center of the sinks and splashes everywhere. She also does not like the new science benches because the students do not face her when she is teaching. She prefers to have her students facing her at all times, which makes it harder to talk to the whole class when not facing her. Even with these problems, she is happy with her new classroom.
Mr. Potocki is happy with his new science classroom despite some issues. Even though he likes some parts of the room, the shallow sinks, gas valves, and problems with the Smartboard at times make teaching more frustrating for him.
Mr. Brumagin really likes his new science classroom. The desktops are smooth and do not scratch, which makes working on experiments much easier. There was only one hiccup: one of the corner drawers could not be pulled out because the handles from the other drawers were in the way. Brumagin brought this to the attention of the installation crew that was installing the rooms and they fixed it temporarily. Also, there is a gap in the countertops, but the installation crew states it will be fixed in the near future. He also likes the nice, clean floor, which makes the classroom look bright and organized. Overall, he is happy with the new classroom and enjoys teaching there.
