ADHD Awareness Month: 'The Many Faces of ADHD'

October is the one month out of the year where our goal as a society is to raise awareness about ADHD. ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and makes it difficult for people to focus, or keeps them hyperactive. This is a disorder that affects one in 16 adults in the United States, and can affect relationships, school, work , or even daily life.

This year, the theme for ADHD Awareness Month is “The Many Faces of ADHD,” which represents all the different people who struggle with this disorder. The Awareness Month Coalition is partnering with many organizations all around the world to spread knowledge about ADHD, including APSARD and ADHD Europe. These companies and groups are offering prizes and rewards for individuals sharing their stories living with the disorder this month.

I had a personal conversation with Liz Colwell who has first hand experience living with ADHD.

“ADHD can be a burden for many people including myself,” Liz said. “I’ve struggled through my high school career getting my work done and focusing on the important things.”

Liz continued, “This mental disorder should be talked about more, because many people can feel isolated or different even though there are many that also live with ADHD every day. Just know even though at times it can be overwhelming, it does not define you.”

After hearing Liz’s story, hopefully you will help to spread awareness about ADHD this month. It is affecting your peers more than you know.
