Why do the most popular media companies keep failing?

I’m sure it’s not too much of a surprise to hear that a lot of bad games and movies have come out recently, but what’s also not surprising is that it keeps happening over and over. With big companies like even Marvel and Ubisoft, which used to be world-renowned, are now known as just looking for that extra buck.

To speak from the movie perspective, it comes down to a lot of factors like just plain greed, new companies buying the rights to make a cheap rip off like the newer “Home Alone” movies, which used to be a fan-favorite but now all of them past the second are seen as cheap imitations no one remembers. But it can always come down to just trying to pump a movie full of different A-list celebrities that are paid way too much to do simple lines, then there is no budget left for hiring good screenwriters or VFX. Also, just plain rushing a movie that could have been good and turning it into a husk with no real plot.

And now from a video game perspective, gaming failures is a lot less of a range. It is mostly just because gaming is expensive and the higher ups at game companies don’t play games, so they don’t know what the consumer wants. To expand upon those points, movies need actors, which have lines and movement that would be needed of them. Games need those same things except the talking part is done in a room in a studio and the moving part is done with motion capture (link to see how it all works). The main problem of gaming though is a lack of motivation to build a good game. Small studios have all of the creative freedom to make the best game they want to make; big studios kill motivation because if you have a good idea for the game, the directors who don’t play games, or simply want it done fast for money, will shut the idea down.

To put it simply, most failures in the gaming industry are from just plain greed, lack of communication, or simply not allowing good communication. Below are some movies and games that flopped with why they flopped:

Some games that flopped in 2024

Concord (little to no marketing, didn’t make it free like its competitors did, poor game design, focused too much on being “woke” that all characters felt fake and not relatable)

Skull and Bones (not enough effort into a story, failed to retain the interest of its player base, greedy publisher Ubisoft)

Star Wars Outlaws (unrealistic ideas for final creation, bad marketing, dull compared to what was promised, repetitive)

Some movies that have flopped in 2024

Joker: Folie à Deux (made to get money, little to no passion behind it, continued when the first one had a great ending)

Borderlands (just plain boring, money hungry creators, actors didn’t look like the characters)

Madame Web (a weak plot, bad script, disappointing villain)
