“I dibs music first!” exclaimed Fritz, excitedly. He grabbed his favorite mix tape and played it. Everyone was laughing and having a fun time (well mostly for everyone.) Sam was in the back, thinking of her parents and how she would miss them. She only thought of what would happen if her parents never made it back home, or if something bad would occur.
“Don’t be so nervous, Sam. This will be fun. You got us. You have nothing to be scared about.” Amy said reassuringly to Sam. She smiled, listening to Amy’s voice. She shook her head in agreement, looking out the window.
“Yeah, I guess so.” Sam replied, trying not to think about her parents. “I just fear every day they won’t make it back. Or something bad will happen. I mean, we don’t even know what they do for a living. It could be dangerous.” She tried to explain herself.
Fritz looked at Sam. “Don’t be so annoying, Sam, our parents are fine. Just have some fun.” Amy turned on Sam’s favorite song, and everyone started dancing and singing. Sam joined in.
After this continued for a few hours, the sun started to set, and the sky started to turn to night. “Jeremy, where are we going?” Asked Hannah from the passenger seat. Jacob joined in on the conversation, also wondering where they were.
“Not too sure. I’m gonna find us a place to stay tonight.” He pulled over to the side of the road, and turned on the car light, looking at the map. “That’s weird. We should be in a town of some sort, but there’s no buildings in sight.” He looked around, trying to find any place he could use a phone. He looked at Hannah and everyone else, his smile fading. “There’s nothing for miles except roads and trees,” he said, trying to stay focused.
“Let’s just stay here for the night,” Hannah interrupted, looking back at everyone. Sam was trying to stay calm. They all agreed.
“Then it’s final, we stay here until morning, and then we will find a way out of this forest,” Jacob said, keeping a relaxed voice.
Everyone grabbed their blankets and prepared their beds in the car, getting ready to sleep. Sam was trying to stay calm, and not scare herself more. She prepared her blanket and started to sleep.
As the night went on and everyone was enjoying their rest, Sam woke up feeling like something was seriously wrong. This wasn’t because the area was isolated or surrounded by an eerie forest or roads, but because she felt like she was being watched, especially when she was sleeping. She tried to ignore it at first, but she couldn’t, and started to panic. She didn’t want to wake everyone else up, so she silently suffered. She started to see things that she simply couldn’t ignore. She let off a quiet scream. She felt something touch her, and was about to scream, but realized it was just Jacob.
“Sam, you don’t look or sound good. What has happened?” Jacob tried to calm Sam down, attempting to get answers or provide some type of help.
Sam looked back at Jacob, tears in her eyes. “We have to go. I felt something. I saw something.” She started to hyperventilate, her heart racing.
“Nothing is here, Sam. It’s just you, me, and our friends.” Jacob smiled reassuringly, checking up on her.
“No, I saw things that shouldn’t even be thought of. I saw ghosts. I saw creatures. I saw inhuman things,” she explained, trying not to sound like she was making this whole thing up. Sweat covered her face, when Jacob realized something was actually wrong.
“Here. Let me help you,” he reached for the water, and gave it to Sam. He gave her some snacks, and took her outside the truck, to cool off. “Sometimes our nightmares feel realer than they should. You were probably just having a bad dream, which caused you to feel like this, and be scared,” Jacob explained, trying to bring some comfort to Sam.
“Thanks, I needed this,” Sam answered, feeling some relief. She was starting to feel better.
“You’re welcome, Sam,” he smiled, and they stayed up together for a good while. They laughed a bit, but were quiet enough not to wake up anyone else. They talked for a while, until Sam started to fall asleep. Jacob noticed this, and smiled, seeing Sam feel better. Since Jacob was a light sleeper, and he could hear everything in his sleep, he would occasionally check back up on Sam if he heard or felt something was wrong.
During Sam’s rest, the things she saw came back, but she tried to not let them get to her. This time, her dreams turned into nightmares, and they started haunting her. This time was different. This time, her dreams were about the road they were staying on. However, they felt real, like they would happen at any moment. They felt so real, that they became visions. During the course of these, she saw her friends all die, and was left to survive alone. She saw her parents’ dead bodies as well. She couldn’t move at all during these cruel visions, and she couldn’t even scream.
