“Dexter: Original Sin” is the third installment in the Dexter franchise, which started with “Dexter” back in 2006.
This story takes place as a prequel to the original, setting up the origin story of serial killer Dexter Morgan. It goes through what happened with Dexter that made him become a serial killer and shows how he learns to act like a normal person alongside his father, Harry Morgan, who knows about his secret and actively encourages it, and also with his sister Debra, who doesn’t know. Dexter tries not to get caught by the same police department he works at.
Like any new casting of a show, there was speculation and mixed opinions on whether the actors were the right fit and if the show was even needed. I can personally say I found that, while the first couple episodes were not the best, it certainly improved throughout the rest of the show.
Every actor and actress did a great job, although there were two performances that really stood out to me. Patrick Gibson, who plays young Dexter, really nailed the mannerisms that the original had. Also, Patrick Dempsey, who plays the police captain.
This show is aimed at people who like the original series and wanted to see more, but it can definitely be enjoyed by all people. Just be aware that while it hasn’t been rated yet, it contains strong violence, gore, and swearing, so it probably shouldn’t be watched by young children. Overall, this show surpasses expectations and I definitely recommend watching it.
