ESPN’s most well-known NBA insider, Adrian Wojnarowski or “Woj,” has retired. He announced this information on Wednesday, September 18, along with the news that he has taken the job as the General Manager of the men’s basketball program at St. Bonaventure University.
Wojnarowski went to St. Bonaventure in college and paved the way for sports journalism in the NBA. His articles have been the most reliable news for NBA fans because of his fast timing and connection with the league. His reports are often known as “Woj Bombs” with fans commenting with the bomb emoji or the explosion emoji. Woj was at Yahoo! Sports from 2009-20017. In 2017 he decided to go write for ESPN and has been up until now.
Wojnarowski decided to quit ESPN because he didn’t have the love for journalism anymore, stating that he didn’t want to hold his phone “at the urinal anymore” and that he “wanted his life back.” He also stated that he was “No longer driven.” He wants to spend his life “in ways that are more personally meaningful.” He “wanted his life back” and “didn’t want to work on holidays, and didn’t want to be away from more family gatherings.” Wojnarowski will be walking away from a rough estimate of $20 million, according to The Athletic.
Wojnarowski attended college for journalism at St. Bonaventure and will now be going back full circle. His new job will consist of focusing on name, image, likeness opportunities, recruiting, alumni player relationships, and transfer portal management. Woj is planning on making a big investment of time into the program stating, “I am hopeful that I can bring value in a lot of areas to our basketball program and open doors for our young men’s futures in ways both professionally and personally.”
Our very own Corry Beaver Tales reporters and editors have been attending St. Bonaventure’s CommDay for the past two years. At CommDay students travel to the campus for their keynote speaker, communications workshops, and a campus tour. St. Bonaventure provides a variety of different breakfast foods and even a lunch at their own cafeteria that consists of a buffet with different choices. Mr. McBriar said about CommDay: “If there is interest and we are able, I do plan on attending the event in the future.” This is a great connection between Corry’s journalism class and a well-known journalist.
