2023 is the Summer of Cinema

Summer is an exciting time for many: nice weather, fun activities, time off school. But this summer, the thing many are looking forward is the films. From colorful comedies like “Barbie,” dark dramas like “Oppenheimer,” here are some of the most highly-anticipated movies of Summer 2023.

“Barbie” directed by Greta Gerwig

Set for a theatrical release on July 21, 2023, “Barbie” is one of the most-anticipated films of the summer. Boasting an all-star cast including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Michael Cera, and more, the movie follows the most iconic doll’s (played by Robbie) adventures in Barbie Land. One of the most intriguing aspects of this film has been the ambiguity surrounding it. The comedy elements are apparent, but fans have also speculated satire or even darker themes. There is no doubt “Barbie” will be one of the top-grossing productions this summer.

“Oppenheimer” directed by Christopher Nolan

The biggest box office competition for “Barbie” is Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, which also has a theatrical release on July 21. Starring Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, and more A-list actors, the film follows the real-life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy), the man who led to the invention of the atomic bomb. “Oppenheimer” advertises itself as a gritty, dramatic biopic. Nolan, best known for films like “Interstellar”, “Inception”, and “The Dark Knight” has a massive fan base who will no doubt come out in droves to support the director’s newest film.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers

Released in 2018, “Spider-Man:Into the Spider-Verse” is one of the most well-loved animated films in recent memory. The long-awaited sequel stars many voice actors reprising their roles, like Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, and more. This movie will continue the story of Miles Morales (Moore) as he struggles through the multiverse with his other spider friends. Releasing on June 2, 2023, this superhero flick will kick off the summer movie season, certainly with a bang.

“Asteroid City” directed by Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson is famous for his unique aesthetic in films like “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “Moonrise Kingdom,” and his newest release is no exception. With an impressive cast including Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, and Margot Robbie, it follows a mysterious event at a Space Cadet Convention in small town 1950s America. “Asteroid City” is set for release on June 16, 2023.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” directed by James Mangold

Director James Mangold takes over the newest installment of this iconic Spielberg series, with Harrison Ford reprising the titular role for the first time since 2008. Joined by an ensemble cast including Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Antonio Banderas, everyone’s favorite archaeologist is back, this time fighting to keep a historic dial out of the hands of a former Nazi (Mikkelsen). This highly anticipated film releases on June 30, 2023.

“Haunted Mansion” directed by Justin Simien

Based on the beloved Disney Parks ride of the same name, “Haunted Mansion” features unsuspecting people coming face to face with the ghosts of the haunted mansion.
