Welcoming Will

Nowadays compared to the past, people of the LGBTQ community may have an easier time coming out with their sexuality. They have more people to relate to,  lean on, and it is just a more welcoming experience. It is more accepted and normalized now. Even though there are always hateful people, it still seems as if the entire thing is just easier and more peaceful.

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” star, Noah Schnapp, came out to the world as gay. He did this in the most Gen Z way possible, by making a TikTok video. The TikTok had this sentence written on the video, “When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘we know.’” The sound playing in the background of the video was a female saying, “You know what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious.”

A very iconic caption Schnapp added to the video was, “I guess I’m more similar to Will than I thought.” The reason this sentence sparked everyone’s attention and made people go crazy was because the character he plays in “Stranger Things,” Will, is a part of the LGBTQ community.

The video immediately went viral. Currently standing at 68.6 million views, 12.7 million likes, and 510,000 comments. Scrolling through his comments, only supportive and loving comments would be found. His coming out story went viral on most platforms, trending on Twitter’s trending list, and so many fans creating their own TikTok videos raving about the entire situation. Many fans were astonished how he took a typically serious conversation but portrayed it in a TikTok. Others expected nothing less from this trendy television star.
