A Broken Chain

(I wrote this on a laptop with a broken “i” key)
A Broken Chain

They ponder on the thought. Why had the one they thought was their friend done this? What would they do now? They look around at the ash-covered ground where they sit. They slowly stand up and attempt to brush themselves off, then they sneeze. The ash in the air is not a pleasant thing to breathe in. They grunt softly.

“Where do I go now?” they asked as they started to wander in the woods, their arms in a position similar to that of a t-rex.

They look around, then cough, the ash irritating their lungs. They find a note taped to a rock not far from the ash-covered ground and they read it.

“If you’re reading this, you should be dead, but you’re not, are you? Well, now all you have is ash and a broken chain. You won’t survive alone. You’ll never find me or anyone who can help you, so don’t try to. You were always a burden to me, and now I’m free from you. I hope your useless-hide dies out there. From J.J.” They wipe their tears as they finish reading. A tear falls onto the paper, then more and more.

“I thought he was my friend!” they yell through their sobs. They sob and smack their head, then they curl up on the ground. A familiar cat runs over to them and sniffs them, then they get up and follow the familiar cat while sniffling, but they don’t know where the familiar cat is going. The cat turns around every so often to make sure they’re still following it.

“Hungy…” They mumble, and the cat stops and sniffs the air, as if it understands their words.

“Merrrow!” The cat leads them to a small hut where there is a little bit of food, then, after they eat, the cat leads them to a road.

“Where are we?” they ask in confusion as they look around. The cat meows, then starts to walk down the road as they follow.

The cat leads them to a town, a familiar town, then to a police station. They grunt and rock back and forth a bit, then a police officer walks in and looks very worried.

“What happened, little one?” The concerned officer asks.

“Cabin burned, friend left…” they manage to mutter, then they cough and collapse. They wake up in a hospital and look around in confusion.

“Cat?” They ask in confusion as they look around. The cat jumps onto the bed and purrs.

“Pepper…” they mutter in shock, their memory flooding back to them, then they look down at their left leg, a scar on their ankle, a constant reminder of that broken chain…
