In 2019, Nintendo released a new video game trailer to the public. Fans all over the world raced to see what the newest game would be. You can only imagine their joy and shock when they saw the familiar faces of Princess Zelda and her knight Link.
“The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” was released in 2017, and instantly became a fan favorite. It was an instant success, with millions of copies sold all across the world. It was dubbed the title of game of the year, and Nintendo was flourishing, so when fans saw that there would be a sequel to this brilliant masterpiece, they were ecstatic. However, with the intervention of COVID-19, production came to a halt, and had to be set back. Fans slowly tired of waiting and began to forget about the new release, until the final trailer was released. At the end of this trailer, the release date for the game was posted, giving fans hope once again. The title was also released, dubbing what fans had once called “Breath of the Wild 2” “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.”
In May of 2023, the game was released, and I, as well as many other fans, downloaded the game as soon as possible. A few weeks after the game’s release, it was still the talk of the gaming media. However, the mood was changing, with some fans unsure how to feel about it. Some complained about the storyline not meeting the expectations set by its predecessor. Some praised the game for its creativity, characters, and rejoiced at the return of the demon king Ganondorf. I happened to be one of the fans who praised the game. I went into this game expecting to be amazed, and amazed I was.
The animation, graphics, story, and characters were so amazing. I was also slightly biased, seeing as how “Breath of the Wild” was my first ever Zelda game, and I just saw it as better than any of the older ones. However, players who have been playing the games since the original 1986 version seemed to not enjoy it quite as much. Many compared “Tears of the Kingdom” unfavorably to the 1998 N64 “Ocarina of Time,” saying that it had a much better story, and that TOTK was very overrated.
However, as I stated before, I believe that this game was a success. It is one of my all-time favorite video games, dare I say my favorite? I totally recommend it to any other fellow video game lovers, and would love to hear the opinion of others on the game!
