Are you looking for a near future dystopian film that’s not actually about zombies? Are you looking for a film that is set in 2045 where people rely on technology to escape reality? The movie that would best fit this category is “Ready Player One.” This movie is based on a society on a planet that is on the brink of chaos and collapse.
A young boy named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) finds out the truth about his collapsing reality, and must go on a mission to find hope and salvation for the rest of society with his best friend Aech (Helen Harris). He meets Samantha Evelyn (Olivia Cooke) who joins him in his journey to bring faith to humanity. They have to go through the OASIS, created by James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who promises to provide an immense fortune to whoever discovers his hidden Easter Egg amongst everything going on. One problem: the group must protect the OASIS and defeat Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), the CEO of the IOI, a government group also after the Easter Egg.
“Ready Player One” was extremely fun to watch, and had me at the edge of my seat. I was attached to several characters and was happy with their story arcs. There were many plot twists that I felt made this film way better. Despite the fact that some scenes were more difficult to watch, because of the emotion and some violence, they were still amazing and made the movie worth watching.
This is rated PG-13, because of the violence, language, and some suggestive material. I believe this movie would suit an audience above 13, because it may be a bit disturbing for younger children. Overall, teens and even adults would most enjoy this type of film.
I give this film 4.5 stars because I could watch it several times without being bored. I am more of a fan of end of the world movies. Incorporating video game elements to that made it unique compared with some of the other dystopian films I enjoy. The story was full of action and was very well done. Even if you don’t enjoy the dystopian genre as much, you will definitely enjoy this take and should give it a shot.
