'Alone at Prom' by Tory Lanez is a modern 80s masterpiece

Now controversial figure Tory Lanez’s 2021 album “Alone at Prom” is considered by many to be his best. Originally slated to be part one of a three part series before his incarceration, it shows how much potential and how versatile he was as an artist. He is well known for his ability to produce hard-hitting rap songs mixed in with his older work as well as amazing singing performances on R&B songs, which can be seen on “Alone at Prom.”

The whole album is themed after ’80s style instrumentals and, well, being alone at prom. Starting with “Pink Dolphin Sunset” featuring Tee as the intro track, it serves as a great introduction to what you’re getting with the rest of the album with an upbeat electronic beat and singing about chasing someone.

After a short interlude, the next song is his most well known with over 1 billion streams on Spotify. It is a smooth, melancholy instrumental mixed with heartfelt vocals about feeling defeated at the dance. “The Color Violet” is definitely the best song on the album and I think is the best song he’s made. The mix of the instrumental, lyrics, and vocals perfectly capture the dark, rainy, late night atmosphere.

Moving on to the next song, “Lady of Namek” is about how he feels like he is in the middle and doesn’t know what to do. He feels conflicted because his date keeps beating around the bush and he feels like he is running out of time.

The next song, “Pluto’s Last Comet” is a very upbeat song about how he knows he is getting played but still loves the chase. Although at this point in the album some of the beats start to feel like they are the same, he still manages to keep his singing and flow fresh and this song is a great example of how changing his tone throughout the song can make it really entertaining and unique.

Moving on to the outro, “Last Kiss of Nebulon” is an electric performance about how Lanez knows that this isn’t going to lead anywhere, but he still chooses to play into it for one night just to have fun before leaving.

The whole 11 song album has a mood and story for just about any situation you could have and its mixed with great production and truly incredible performances by Tory. If you love modern ’80s-style music or just R&B in general. I highly recommend this album. I would rate it a 5/5.
