Ever since the release of Don Toliver’s fourth studio album “Hardstone Psycho,” I knew that I had to go see it live. I was a fan before this and this album could be considered his best. Electric performances on songs like “TORE UP,” “BANDIT,” and “KRYPTONITE” stood out to me and I knew they would be incredible in a concert atmosphere. To my luck on his “Psycho Tour,” it was announced that he would be performing in Pittsburgh.
The concert was at Pittsburgh Paints Arena where the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team play, which is right in downtown Pittsburgh. Parking was relatively easy and we were there before gates opened at 6:30. The line to get in wasn’t terribly long but it did take a while.
Once inside we went to a merch stand and I got a sweatshirt. Then we went down to the floor just in time for the first opener Molly Santana. We were in the back of the floor, but it wasn’t sold out and it was pretty small in general, so we still had a great view of the stage. She only performed for about 15 minutes and was not that enjoyable, honestly.
Then, the second opener Monaleo came out and the crowd was more energetic and so was the performance. After this the last opener, Ski Mask the Slump God performed and it was fantastic. He played some of his own songs and since he was close friends with the late Juice WRLD and XXXTentacion he played songs from them as well. Originally, it was planned to have Teezo Touchdown as an opener, but I am happy I got to see Ski Mask instead because I know more of his songs.
Then at around 9:30 Don Toliver came out and from the start it was very cinematic with a lot of pyrotechnics and live instruments. There was the main stage and a large catwalk. On the main stage there were stairs going up and a large spherical cage that stunt bikers went into for one song. All the performances were great with “TORE UP” being by far the most energetic. He also played a couple slower songs that were also great. For the slower songs, he had a platform that raised up that he stood on to sing.
There was an incident later into the concert where they had to stop the show for around 10 minutes because someone had broken their leg, allegedly trying to do a backflip. Other than that the crowd was great and the whole show had a lot of energy. Overall, I think this was the best concert I have ever been to and it was a great experience.
