Have you ever had something very lucky happen to you that you just don’t feel like it should have? Well, I experienced that a few years ago when I shot a deer in the ear that was about five yards away from my father and I.
I have little belief of good and bad luck, but on this one November day I had definitely gotten lucky. It was the second weekend after the first day and we hadn’t seen anything over the first few days. Then, that second weekend, we just started off really well. On Friday, my brother had gotten a nice six point. Saturday morning my cousin and a hunting buddy of mine both got five points. So it was a great weekend to start, but I still hadn’t seen a thing.
My brother really wanted me to get a deer and he was confident that this one deer drive would work pretty well for me. My brother along with three of my cousins got about one hundred yards apart and drove through a whole patch of woods. While they were driving, my dad set me up in the field right next to the patch of woods that my brother and three cousins were pushing. I had a hard time finding a good position to be in. I tried resting up against a tree, and that didn’t work; then, I tried kneeling down, and that didn’t work either. So finally I sat my back up against a tree and told my dad to stomp down all the brush in my line of sight. While he was stomping down the brush, another five point buck was running across the field. My dad quickly took cover and sat behind me.
The deer came in at a full sprint, and I couldn’t really put my scope on it. Finally it took a turn and started running right at me, and at this point, it’s only about ten yards away. My dad was yelling at me to shoot, so I flicked the safety off and just fired that thing without aiming. I hip shot the deer and the bullet ended up entering its ear. My first thought was that I missed because after I shot, the deer disappeared and I just thought it took off. Come to find out the five point was about fifteen yards away laying on the ground. I looked up from the deer to see my brother running through the field right down the same path the deer had taken. He managed to push that deer probably about 400 yards. It was a great way to end the weekend of hunting. We had a total of four bucks in the time span of 24 hours, which still is insane to me.
