On Saturday, November 9, the Girls Volleyball team traveled to Sharon, Pa to face the Dictrict 6 Champs, the Richland Ramblers in the PIAA State Playoff Quarter Finals. The game started at 2 p.m., and the gym was full of Corrians rooting for the Lady Beavers.
The Beavers did not have the best start as they fell short to the Rams in the first set, the score being 23-25. The set was so close, but Corry was unable to get the lead. Corry had still not gained their momentum throughout the second set, as they were trailing by five as the Rams closed the second set with another win. All Richland needed was to stay above the Beavers throughout the third set and successfully win the PIAA Quater Finals.
The Beavers came to the third set ready to fight after an encouraging pep talk from head coach Kelly Goodsell, ” Kelly told us that we just need to focus on this set. We need to get this set and then worry about the rest later. I think that is what really allowed us as a team to come back and win the third set.” Senior Makenna Moore said when asked what shift happened to make them make such a powerful comeback.
The tensions were high as the Beavers gained the lead early in the third set, as the Rams were unable to keep up with the newfound momentum that the Beavers carried. Corry took the third set with a ten point lead on Richland, the final score being 25-15.
Corry fed off the energy of the excited fans throughout the fourth set, but the Rams did not let the Beavers gain as big of a lead as they did in the third set. The final score of the fourth set was 25-23.
The final set was by far the most intense and competitive, as Richland would not let Corry gain a lead any bigger than three points. A kill from Senior Emmalee Carr followed by back-to-back Kills from Senior Aubrey Chase allowed Corry to secure the lead. A roll shot by Senior Halle Albers brought the Beavers to game point, as the score was 14-11. An Error by Richland and a scrambled play by the Beavers winning them the PIAA Quater Finals.
The Beavers advance to the final four, as they will play their D10 rivals Cathederal Prep on Tuesday, November 12 at McDowell High School for the semifinals. The Beavers have faced Prep twice before and recently beat them in the D10 championship match.
There will be a student fan bus that will be taking students to the game if they want to go but do not have the transportation. The theme is orange, students are highly encourage to attend Tuesdays game if possible.
