On Monday Corry’s Honors History 11 classes and history teacher Mr. Woods put on a Veterans Breakfast.
From 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. all veterans were welcome to enjoy breakfast and enjoy a good time together. There were posters and thank you cards made by the History students, placemats colored by Corry’s first grade students and various decorations set up. About 45 veterans and their guests attended the breakfast.
“We had approximately 45 veterans and their guests attend,” commented history teacher, Mr. Woods. “This was a student outreach with the primary school providing the placemats, thank you cards and posters from the middle school and the high school students served and greeted the veterans.”
The students greeted all the veterans handing them mini flags and a card. Some of the breakfast items served were coffee juice, donuts, cinnamon rolls, eggs and sausage. A few members from the Corry Band played the National Anthem and Marches of the Armed Forces.
“It was a very gratifying experience I think for both the veterans and the high school students,” commented history teacher Mr. Woods. “I was proud of how our students got out of their comfort zones to meet and converse with the veterans. Citizenship is an active role and the veterans of the community are a great example of people contributing to make this country great. I think that is the lesson students will take away, that freedom is not free.”
