Have you ever wanted to hear a genre-bending album with well executed rap, hip-hop, and RnB elements? Then you might want to listen to Don Toliver’s fourth studio album “Hardstone Psycho.”
Following his 2023 album “Lovesick,” which overall was considered underwhelming, he needed to bounce back. “Hardstone Psycho” was highly anticipated after the release of the single “Bandit,” which peaked at number 38 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and was used as a song on TikTok.
The album is heavily influenced by the biker aesthetic, featuring a motorcycle on the album cover as well as Toliver wearing a biker jacket on stage during his Psycho Tour. It includes a variety of sounds with heavier rock influenced songs, RnB songs, and more typical trap songs.
The content matter consists of typical trap lyrics talking about drugs, women, and money. Although, on certain songs it goes into depth about believing in yourself and staying motivated. Standout songs include “Kryptonite,” the intro with bike exhaust and electric guitar in the instrumental; “TORE UP,” which is the most rock-influenced song with heavy electric guitars and an intense chorus; “Backstreets,” a more melodic song with acoustic guitar making the instrumental very unique; “4×4” being a more rap heavy track also including rock elements; and “Brother Stone” featuring a great Kodak Black verse. That being said, there are some duds on the album like “Attitude,” “Last Laugh,” and “Hardstone National Anthem,” which lack uniqueness and replay value.
Overall, I think the album offers a very unique experience from the typical trap albums released in 2024. It has a lot of elements from different genres that help offer a new experience in each song. With everything else released this year, this album is definitely a top 10 album of the year and in my opinion is top five. I would give this album an 4/5.
