The new kickoff rule doesn’t do anything to prevent injuries or promote more returns. The new kickoff rule the ball still starts at the thirty five. The kicking team that is not the kicker will all line up at the receiving teams forty yard line. The ten kicking team players cannot move until the ball hits the landing zone, or end zone. The receiving team can line up between the thirty and thirty five yard line. Only two returners can move anytime prior to or during the kick.
A reason I think this rule is bad is that it doesn’t even promote more returns. According to Mike Florio sixty three point five percent of returns resulted in touch backs which is not much different than last years percentages. This shows that the new kickoff rule barely affects returns. Only nineteen point eight percent of kickoff’s have fell in the landing zone which also shows that it does not prevent more returns, because most kicks just go into the end zone.
A solution to fix this kickoff rule is to switch it back to the old one. Another solution I could think of is maybe the kicker could kick farther back to prevent them for kicking into the end zone every time. They could make them lineup at the twenty five maybe.
