Thursday, October 10, the Lady Beavers hosted the North East Grape Pickers. The game would determine the Region 4 Champions of the 2024 Volleyball season. Corry was in the lead by two, over both Cathedral Prep and Fairview. The Beavers only had two matches left; all the girls needed was to beat the Grape Pickers to win the title.
The first set started off strong. Corry jumped a six point lead by senior Halle Albers serves followed with kills by seniors Allison Sawyer and Aubrey Chase. A North East error brought Corry to double digits, the score being 10-5. The Grape Pickers called their first time out when the Beavers were leading by six, the score being 11-5. A tip from sophomore Grace Allen gave the Beavers a six point lead. Errors from North East made the score 16-8, the Beavers having an eight point lead. A kill from Sawyer gave the Beavers a 10-point lead. A Grace Allen kill brought Corry to 20, as the Grape Pickers only had nine points. An Ace from Aubrey Chase brought the score to 23-11 followed by a block from senior Sadye Dyne, bringing Corry to set point. The first set ended by a hard driven spike by none other than Grace Allen.
The second set started out well for the Beavers, gaining a seven-point lead off four service aces by Halle Albers and North East errors, which caused the North East to call their first time out as they were trailing by seven. The Grape Pickers made a slight come back, trailing by three points (10-7). Corry then followed with a big run leading by nine points, making the score 15-6 on scores from Chase, Sawyer, Dyne, Allen, and Sophomore Kemp. The Lady Beavers continued strong in the second set, the final score being 25-13.
The third set was more intense than the first two. The set started off with North East holding a one point lead (3-2), but Corry soon took the lead, getting a large jump, the score being 23-17. Though the Beavers were in the lead at first, the Grape Pickers made a comeback trailing Corry by one once the Beavers got to game point. The tensions were high when senior Allison Sawyer came in with a powerful kill, going through a North East block, ending the night with a successful win in more ways than one for the Lady Beavers.
The Beavers won their last regular season home match of the season, an especially special night for the nine seniors this year. The win was also Coaches Kelly and Pat Goodsel’s 250th win of their coaching career.
