Imagine not having the freedom to choose what you can wear. Well, that’s what is happening in this school. People like to wear certain things to show their personality. Clothes are one of the best and easiest ways to show who we really are. They can also show people what we are interested in and can help us make friends. The dress code is too strict and does not allow us to show individuality.
The school dress code is an ongoing debate, with many arguing for changes. There are several compelling reasons why the school dress code should be updated. Some examples are promoting individuality, ensuing comfort, and addressing issues of equality. The dress code says we can’t wear baggy clothes and that we cannot show our shoulders. It also states other stuff but these are some of the main things people complain about.
Letting kids wear clothes that they feel comfortable in will help them feel more like themselves and be more focused on school and not that they don’t like what they have to wear. A strict dress code can make students not be as creative and make them feel less unique. Showing our shoulders should not be distracting. Off the shoulder shirts are in style right now and a lot of dressier shirts now are off the shoulder. People like to wear them because they are in style and comfortable. An example is when I saw a student get in trouble for showing their shoulders when their shoulders were barely showing.
Baggy pants should be allowed to be worn. The dress code says not to wear overly baggy pants, but baggy pants are also in style right now. Also, a lot of kids wear them because they are more comfortable than tight fitting pants. Most kids only wear baggy sweatpants rather than jeans. Baggy pants are also warmer and the school can get pretty cold, so they also keep us warmer and not worrying about how cold we are. One example from an anonymous female student is that she wore something that wasn’t inappropriate at all and a teacher screamed down the hall and said, “Don’t you have any self-respect?”
The dress code is there so that we are safe and focused on school. They probably don’t want us to wear baggy pants so that we can’t hide anything in them, but people wear them for comfort not to hide something. They don’t want us to wear off the shoulder tops so that we don’t distract other kids from learning, but our shoulders shouldn’t be that distracting. Who’s going to want to stare at someone’s shoulders?
If they just made a few changes like letting us wear off the shoulder tops and baggy pants, the students might actually want to come to school. Also, everyone would be more comfortable. Changing the dress code offers benefits like self-expression, ensuring comfort, and addressing equality. By making these changes, the school can create a more supportive and inclusive environment that values the individuality and well-being of all students.
