Many people at our school play at least one sport. This can be beneficial because it helps you stay in shape, helps build teamwork skills, and can give you more responsibility, along with many other benefits. I decided to ask various students how many sports they play. I got to talk to 33 different students, and I was honestly very surprised with the results.
0- 24%
I was most surprised by how many students don’t play any sports. Prior to this poll, I was sure that most students played at least one sport, but 24% of the students I asked did not play a sport, making zero sports tied with two sports for the most common amount of sports played.
1- 18%
Many students just choose to play one sport. They often prefer to play a sport during one season and have the rest of the year to rest and focus more on school, and sometimes work. 18% of the students only play one sport, which wasn’t too surprising.
2- 24%
The same amount of questioned students play two sports as the ones that don’t play any sports. Many students play sports in two different seasons and have a break in between. Sometimes students do a second sport in order to stay in shape for their main sports. For example, many athletes choose to do track in the spring in order to stay in shape for the main sport that they focus on. 24% of the students play two sports.
3- 21%
The third most popular amount of sports played is three (zero and two are tied for first). A lot of the younger students (middle school and freshmen) said they played three sports. When they are younger, students don’t tend to have as much homework and responsibilities related to school work. It is easier for them to play multiple sports because their school work is much less than older students. I was still a little bit surprised that 21% of the students play three sports.
4+- 12%
Not very many of the students that I asked play four or more sports. This would be very time consuming and you probably would be very busy all year round. Half of the students who play four or more sports were in middle school, and the other half were freshmen. As explained previously, it is much easier for younger students to play more than one sport which is why I wasn’t expecting many students to answer with four or more sports. 12% of students play four or more sports.
