Have you ever wanted to see a video game movie that mixes reality with the cartoon and animated world? Well then, “Sonic 2” is the perfect movie for your viewing experience. This movie will satisfy fans of the original video game, while adding a few interesting twists. This sequel is based on the video game that originally released in 1993, and both the games and the movies have been a success ever since. “Sonic 2” takes place in the grassy terrain of Green Hill Zones with a hedgehog named Sonic, who must prove he is a hero by acquiring the Master Emerald. However, Sonic’s real test is completing his mission without Dr. Robotnik standing in his way. This leaves us with 1 question, will he be able to do it?
There were some voice actors that displayed their characters extremely well. First, we have Idris Elba (Knuckles). Elba did an amazing job at portraying Knuckles’ personality. He gave him the right amount of energy that this film needed. He added humor to Knuckles’ character, probably better than any other voice actor that could have played him. Knuckles is a major character who accompanies Sonic in obtaining the Master Emerald. Watching “Sonic 2” is worth watching, especially seeing how Knuckles’ character is carried out.
The other voice actor that was featured in this film is, Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails). O’Shaughnessey did a very good job at playing Tails, and definitely made him better than he could have been. She definitely showed Tails’ humble personality, and made his character very likable. Tails is a 2-tailed fox who not only is honest, but also is kind and courageous. Tails joins Sonic’s side, and uses his intelligence for good. Tails is one of the sweeter characters, which makes the film so much better.
Jim Carey also did a great job portraying his role playing as the cocky antagonist (Dr. Robotnik). To be honest, he was annoying, but still managed to bring out Robotnik’s character well.
This movie was much better, especially how the actors showed the character’s personalities and character traits that they originally had.
There were many other details in this film that made it worth watching, such as the hinted references to the original video game. For example, Tom’s ringtone hinted at the original “Sonic” game theme song. I also noticed how the cast and crew included Sonic’s iconic line, “Gotta go fast!!” The slow motion shots were awesome, and highly enjoyable. The CGI and special effects had surprisingly good quality, and the animation was very good too.
There was another aspect of this movie that made it so much better, that being the ending credits. Even though I usually have a strong dislike for the endings, these ones in particular are definitely worth watching. They show some footage from the original game, plus, the post-credit scene is cool, because it sets up a possible, and near-future 3rd movie.
One last thing I found that made this movie unique was a returning second time character known as Rachel (Natasha Rotwell.) Not only is she extremely funny (especially when she’s angry) but she also brought in a more kid friendly approach to the film.
One of the more minor scenes that stood out the most was when the fake wedding of Rachel and secret agent Randall (Shemar Moore) gets crashed by Sonic. This wedding was actually set up by the G.U.N (which consists of all the wedding guests and Randall) to capture Sonic who is believed to be an “uncontrollable extra terrestrial who cannot be left to his own devices.”
This may all sound like a lot, and I don’t disagree, but there are way more elements that make this movie unique. There are a variety of soundtrack choices that make this film unique. There is some romance scattered throughout the film, including some heartwarming moments that may or may not bring tears to your eyes. Even though there are a few slow scenes, overall, this movie still is amazing. The director (Jeff Fowler) took a video game that people love, and knew exactly how to make it into a unique adaptation of the original “Sonic” video game saga. Fowler made not only the game, but also the saga as a whole so much better.
With a PG rating, this movie is aimed to satisfy a younger audience. Younger children and even older teens can enjoy this movie, especially if they are familiar with the “Sonic” game Saga. However, if adults, like parents or grandparents are willing to give this film a chance, then they can also get some enjoyment out of this movie too. This is the perfect way to spend 122 minutes of your day.
