Sci-fi movies have been a popular movie genre for a long time, whether it’s monsters and superheroes, or robots and space conflicts. But good sci-fi movies are hard to come by since it costs a lot of money to film and coming up with something original and entertaining later on in the future is harder since most good ideas have already been used. So when I look for a good sci-fi movie to watch I usually look for these things; good direction from the director, a well written plot for the movie, originality of the movie, solid acting from the actors, and attention to detail used in the movie. The hunt is over now with these top 10 sci-fi movies of all times.
- “The Thing”
“The Thing” takes place in Antarctica with a creature that takes the appearance of its victims and it started out its rampage through a dog. An absolute classic, great to watch or have playing in the background during Halloween, but with the modernization of today’s movies, graphics and colors are bland and outdated.
- “Alien”
Space travelers are in deep space when they explore a planet and one of their members gets sick by something on the planet, then an alien that hatched on the ship hunts the crew down one by one while they try to survive and escape the ship. The originality of the film and effort put into the film such as the costumes, props and acting makes it a worthy watch. But once they turned the one movie into a series that drastically got worse, acting began to become very poor and once they switched to CGI, the monsters weren’t as exciting.
- “Back to the Future”
A scientist figured out how to make a time machine that works through a modified DeLorean. Marty was accidentally sent back in time when the experiment took some unplanned turns. He finds his younger version of his mother and he has to try not to mess up the timeline. The acting and props were outstanding with funny inventions and the classic DeLorean, the originality of the movie was great, but I feel there could have been more done with the direction of the movie to make it feel more lively.
- “The Iron Giant”
A classic movie where a giant alien robot crashes down on Earth in a little town called Rockwell. He is found by a boy named Hogarth who tries to protect him from the government who wants to destroy it seeing it as a threat, the robot was supposed to destroy Earth and cause chaos but he lost his memory since his head was dented from the crash. A fantastic movie nonetheless but there was areas in the movie that could have been expanded or had more attention to detail. I believe if they made a live action version it would be a big hit.
- “Robocop” 2018
An officer is blown up by an explosion but scientists are able to save vital organs and used technology to make him a cyborg. He fought crime and brought true justice to his city. A beautifully displayed movie with great visual details, this would have been a good movie to build a series on with the new graphics but unfortunately it never happened.
- “Superman”
A Kryptonian survivor lands on Earth and gains superpowers due to the suns energy effect on Kryptonians, he later learns that his powers that are given to him on Earth are what is needed to protect the planet from dangers that befall the planet. This movie has the best plot and acting, but due to how old the movie is, the visual effects are outdated. I’m still waiting anxiously for a remake of the original series.
- “The Terminator”
A war robot is sent back in time to kill the young soldier who loses stopped the robot army in the future war, another robot was also sent to protect him and it leads to an action-packed escape to survive. The movie has a great plotline, the series seemed to get better the more films they made and they were able to successfully update their visual effects and acting. My only problem was the severe foul language and most of it was if not all was completely unnecessary.
- “Jurassic Park”
An incredible depiction of what it would be like to roam with the dinosaurs as a vacation island with genetically bred dinosaurs ends up in disaster when they break loose and cause death and destruction throughout the island. The plotline was beautifully put together, props and effects were great for their time. but the acting was more on the poor side.
- “Star Wars”
In an intergalactic war between the light side and the dark side, the light side strategically fights back in hopes of extinguishing the dark side who want total control over the galaxy. Rebel forces battle against the Empire after the light side lost their first battle. One of the best storylines created with great acting and props, the only downside of the series was when Disney took over and made more films and shows, which created too many plot holes for the series to even make sense. They also changed so many characters and pretty much dropped the idea of the original films.
- “Transformers” (Michael Bay)
Alien robots from the planet Cybertron crash land on Earth to find the allspark, which can create more Cybertronians from nothing and provide unlimited energy. The autobots try to obtain it before the evil decepticon leader Megatron finds it to destroy planets and rule the galaxy. The Michael Bay movie series was faithful to the original show and movies and has the best graphics known to date with the most complex CGI characters.
