On Sunday April 14, Andrew McCutchen hit his 300th career home run as the Pittsburgh Pirates faced the Philadelphia Phillies. McCutchen, nicknamed “Cutch,” is 37 years old and has played on the Pirates for most of his career.
McCutchen already had a great game, with three runs and two runs batted in (RBIs). Cutch was due for a home run, as he hit his previous one all the way back in August of last year. He batted against Ricardo Pinto with a 2-2 count. Pinto threw in a slider that stayed a little too high and Cutch rocketed the ball into the left field stands. A pirates fan caught the ball and gave it to his son, who jumped up and down in excitement.
After the game, Cutch met with the father and son who caught the ball. The family gave the ball back to him and in return, got a signed one. Cutch goes on to say how much he appreciates his fans and they are who keep him going.
Cutch joins the only other two Pirates who have hit 300 home runs, Ralph Kiner and Willie Stargell. Last year in December, Cutch signed a one year contract with the Pirates, and he hopes to play at least two more seasons. He wants to finish out his career as a Pittsburgh Pirate.
