On April 12 the newspaper and global media classes were invited to go to CommDay 2024, hosted by St. Bonaventure University.
The University workshops gave newspaper and global media students a glimpse into the future of journalism. CommDay included two sessions to learn about the importance of local news and social media. After the sessions, the campus provided lunch for the attendees and then the rest of the time was free time to explore the campus.
When arriving at the campus, all the students were welcomed by an array of food and drinks to start their morning and then on to the auditorium for the opening of the day. Professor and Jandoli School Dean Aaron Chimbel presented awards for the schools that submitted entries of new articles, videos, and photography. The categories for the rewards were “Best in Show” and “Best in Category.” The judges were looking for excellent writing, headlines, feature stories about a topic, and news reporting on the topic.
For global media they looked for video aesthetic, image quality, and use of sounds or music. For video entries it had to be up to five minutes long, and for story entries they had to submit five different combinations of different stories. After the speaker presented the awards the students split into their sessions.
Corry’s first session was with lecturers Anne Lee and Professor Richard Lee. In the session they talked about the importance of news articles and had the students do a practice sheet.
The students then moved on to session two where the speaker talked about how social media works and how much of it is in day to day life.
After a few hours of seeing real world examples of careers, the students of Corry went to lunch. The lunch room was big and bright with natural light and there was a variety of different foods. Afterwards the students could walk to the bookstore or go on a self-guided tour, which may have included a Starbucks run, and then the students were back on the bus to go home.
Students seemed thankful for this opportunity to be able to explore campuses for possible future careers and the chance to have a day off from school out and about. The presentations were informative and the campus was beautiful.
