Christmas time is here, and it is time to reflect on how Christ has changed me. Worship has become such a special part of my walk, so I’m going to go through my top 10 worship songs.
This song is simply just such a tone setter. It perfectly encapsulates Psalm 100:4, starting the song off with praise before speaking out the gospel in a song.
It is a beautiful, poetic way to look at the gospel of Christ, and Spirit is consistently and actively moving on this song.
It exhibits the power of the gospel, the bridge showing the freedom that is promised in Christ and the praise that we are meant to carry out.
This song shows off the testimony of every single believer: a sinner in need of a savior crying out to God and receiving the spiritual awakening in Christ. It shows the gospel through the lens of Christ’s love, His desire to chase after us and do anything for us to be with him.
On top of that, it shows the victory and hope given to us in Christ. Christ died for us, yes. But he also rose for us, He defeated death for us so that we now have nothing holding us back from Him.
When I hear this song, my first thought is John 3 and being ‘born again.’ This song really shows that off, the transformation brought when you give your life to Christ. Too many ‘christians’ never actually experience this transformation that this song shows off, and it makes me think of how far I’ve come. I’m far from perfect, but I’m close to Christ, and that’s really what matters. This song genuinely empowers me to want to be the best version of me, and I love that.
Man, this song is amazing. This song is such a great reminder of God’s love and his character. God is love, and this song does a great job, spiritually, of what that means and the manifestation of His love.
I think of 1 John 4 when hearing this song, the reality of what it does for us, its goodness, its power, and the gospel’s reflection of that. Every time I hear this song, I physically feel the hug of God’s presence. The comfort that this song brings is immeasurable.
This song is a church favorite, and credit to Eric Knapp for bringing this song alive to me.
This song’s imagery and symbolism represent the fact that we are sinners desperately in need of a savior, and it represents the power behind the fact that Jesus is that savior and redeemer who rescues us from the chains of sin and death.
The bridge of this song is so powerful and authoritative over death, representing the fact that we really are free in Christ and redeemed into eternal life. It’s beautiful.
What is the purpose of life? Well, as a Christian, it is to live every moment in worship and praise to our father in heaven.
This song, the praise and power, the acknowledgement of this fact, that’s what makes it so good. This song represents what us as Christians are meant to live out every moment of every day. We are born to move God’s heart, to pour out our love to him, and do whatever we can to acknowledge his eternal goodness.
Whatever we do, Lord, we do it for you. This song shows true submission to Christ, which we collectively must be doing always.
This song speaks wonders, and it speaks true life into us through what Christ did.
This song is short, but I cannot think of a song with a bridge more powerful than the one in this song. This song echoes John 1, acknowledging the divinity and power that Christ holds.
The name of Christ, yes it is beautiful and wonderful, but above all is truly powerful. Christ, in his glory and comfort in heaven, came down because he desired us. He brought his eternal kingdom down to earth. He defeated death, crushed sin, and truly has no rival. Christ IS above all.
This song, much like Love of God, speaks to the character and nature of God’s loving kindness. But, this song really shows God’s desire. It echoes Luke 15 and the lost sheep, the fact that Christ will chase after anyone out of love to see them saved. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, what you’ve thought, anything, Christ will love you, and he truly desires you.
It also echoes Jeremiah 1, God loving us before we were even created. Christ loves us recklessly, he loves us, fights for us, chases after us, and will truly do anything for us. Spirit MOVES on this song, and it always hits your heart deep.
Quick testimony: One time when I was sitting in my room, I came across a video of an atheist reacting to this song, it was called “Non-Christian feels the reckless love of God through Cory Asbury’s song.” It’s an amazing video. Asbury gets through the first verse and chorus, and then the second verse comes and he says “when I was your foe, still your love fought for me.” This guy starts crying, right then and there. It’s obvious he’s trying to hold it back, but it’s hard for him. You can see the exact moment when this love hits him like a truck.
The song goes on and you can see his demeanor continue to flip, continue to press into this feeling of love. The song ends and he’s talking; he encounters the reckless love of God as an unsaved man. I watch this and I break down in tears, I myself encountering this love at a new level. But, he leaves us with one question that I ask the reader: “Why can’t we do that? Why can’t we love this way? Why can’t we dive deep into our hearts and love this way?”
This song is the perfect sequel to what happens after we encounter this love. It speaks out of acknowledgment, realizing that there is absolutely nothing we can say to truly show our thankfulness for this love, for the cross. We cannot speak out our gratitude, we cannot sing our praises enough. So what do we do?
Nothing works but living a life in total surrender, in a place of ‘hallelujah’. The presence of God is always active in this song, the receptivity of the gospel and the gratefulness on full display constantly. The bridge is when real chills come, showing that even when times get hard we still need to show our gratefulness for him because that’s what a surrendered heart does. This song is five minutes of real praise and veneration to our savior.
This song is a classic, everyone knows and loves it. This song truly speaks to the transformation that Christ brings due to his grace and love. I have no words other than to simply listen. This song is easily relatable, powerful, and simply beautiful. The story behind this song, slave trader turned to Christ, is so beautiful as well, and speaks volumes to the lyrics. So many special moments have been experienced to this song, and there are many more to come.
