On Wednesday, March 19, the Corry Beavers baseball team traveled to Mercyhurst to face the Erie High Royals for the first official game of the 2025 Baseball Season. The game started off strong for the Beavers as they scored their first run from an RBI single by Senior Jacob Gantz that brought Junior Kamdyn Moon into home from second.
As they switched to defense for the bottom of the first, they started with Junior Wyatt Swan on the mound, Senior Wesley Kurelowech behind the plate, Senior Zack Coulter playing third base, Senior Karson Chamberlin at short stop, Junior Kamdyn Moon at second, and Senior Jacob Gantz at first. With Senior Aiden Trask in right field, Junior Tucker Jackson in Center and Freshman Jeremiah Johnson in Left.
As the game headed into the bottom of the fourth inning Junior Kamdyn Moon came into pitch as Swan went out to left field and Jeremiah came in to play second. The Royals were able to score one run from a base hit out to center that allowed Erie’s runner to score from second base. The Beavers were able to hold the Royals as they ended the fourth inning keeping the score as 2-1.
The fifth inning started out in favor of the Beavers as Moon got walked, and Swan had a base hit as there was only one out. Gantz got a free base after taking a hit by a pitch, which brought Aiden Trask into bat with bases loaded and only one out. Trask hit a hard grounder that snuck past the second baseman and entered into right field, bringing in both Moon and Swan and advanced Jake Gantz from first to third. The Royals switched Pitchers as Tucker Jackson was getting ready to bat. A wild pitch allowed Gantz to score and Trask to steal second. Jackson has a hard hit out to right field that advanced Aiden to third as Zack Coulter moved onto the plate. Tucker stole second on the first pitch to Coulter, an error by the Royals allowed Aiden Trask to score and Tucker to make it all the way to third base. A past pitch allowed Jackson to score, making the score 7-1. Coulter’s hit to Center was caught, bringing Wesley Kurelowech to the plate with 2 outs. Wesley hits a base hit out to left field, bringing Jeremiah Johnson to the plate, an infield grounder that ended the Beavers at bat and brought them into the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Royals did not score again until the bottom of the sixth inning. The score was 7-3 as the game went into the seventh inning. Tucker Jackson hit a double, bringing Coulter up to bat. Zack hit the left side, advancing Tucker to third. Kurelowech then hit a hard ground ball up the middle, the Royals get Zack out at second but Wesley beat out the throw being safe at first, Jackson scores. Erie’s pitcher lost his handle on the ball, giving Wesley’s courtesy runner a free base. Karson Chamberlin comes to the plate, hitting a line drive back to the Royals pitcher, giving him an infield RBI. Erie changes their pitcher as Kamdyn’s getting ready for his at bat. Moon hit a deep double into left field, which brought Chamberlin in to score.
The final score was 10-3 as the Beavers took home the win setting the spirits high for the beginning of their season. JV also won their game with a final score of 3-1. The boys will play again on Monday, March 24 at Titusville at 4 pm. They will also play on Thursday, March 27 against Ft. Leboeuf at the Columbus Ballpark at 4:30 pm.
