
The 97th Oscar award ceremony took place on March 2, 2025. The awards were presented at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. There were 23 categories presented during the ceremony. It was hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, which was his first time hosting the Academy Awards.
“Emilia Perez” led the most nominations with a total of thirteen nominations. Next with ten nominations each was, “A Complete Unknown” and “Conclave.” The movie, “Anora” had six nominations. “Dune: Part Two” and “The Substance” both had five nominations each. “Nosferatu” had four nominations. With three nominations each were “I’m Still Here,” “Sing Sing,” and “The Wild Robot.” Lastly, with two nominations each were, “The Apprentice,” “Flow,” “Nickel Boys,” and “A Real Pain.”
There were five films with multiple wins: “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “Wicked.”
The movie “Anora” won a total of five Oscars, which led to the most awards won by a movie that night. This includes Best Picture (Sean Baker), Best Actress (Mikey Madison), Best Director (Sean Baker), Best Original Screenplay (Sean Baker), and Best Film Editing (Sean Baker). Sean Baker broke a record by winning four awards for the same film. The previous record was held by Walt Disney, with four awards as well, but these were for different films.
The other acting awards were Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, and Actress in a Supporting Role. Best Actor in a leading role was won by Adrien Brody in “The Brutalist.” Best Actress in a Supporting role was won by Zoe Saldaña in “Emilia Perez.” Lastly, Best Actor in a Supporting Role was won by Kieran Culkin, in the movie “A Real Pain.”
There were also some performances done at the ceremony. One memorable performance was done by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Grande performed “Over the Rainbow,” from the “The Wizard of Oz.” Erivo then performed, “Home” from “The Wiz.” Then the two went on to perform a duet of the song “Defying Gravity,” which is from their nominated movie, “Wicked.”
Another performance that was memorable was the James Bond tribute to Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Margaret Qualley, Lisa, Doja Cat, and Raye were the performers. The songs that were sung during this performance were: “Live and Let Die” (Lisa), “Diamonds Are Forever” (Doja Cat), and “Skyfall” (Raye), while Qualley was dancing.
