The Pennsylvania State Wrestling Tournament took place March 6-8 in Hershey, where five Corry athletes competed. These athletes included Kael Albers, Mason Savitz, Will Allen, Koda Kuzma, and Finley Fourspring.
Kael Albers went 4-2 and placed seventh. Mason Savitz went 2-2. Will Allen went 0-2. Koda Kuzma went 1-2. Finley Fourspring was disqualified but previously went 2-1 and was looking at a placement. I took the liberty of interviewing all five athletes on their experience at states.
Karl Albers also shared his thoughts on the event. He said that he was happy his hard work paid off at his first time going to states. He thought he wrestled well and could have improved on not giving up unnecessary points. He was 42-7 on the year and is excited to see how Corry will grow.
Senior Mason Savitz was very talkative about his experience. He said that the tournament was a great experience and it was a really cool atmosphere. He also said that last year was his first time, being a senior. He said that he thought he wrestled really bad in his first match and it put him in a really tough spot to place. He did say, however, that he wishes he had a better mentality going into the season and into the tournament. His record heading into the tournament was an impressive 43-3. Lastly, he said that he is very excited to wrestle at Penn State Behrend next year.
Will Allen shared his thoughts by first saying that wrestling at states was a fun experience and it was really rewarding. It was his first time at states and he said he really enjoyed it. He thought he had wrestled the best he had all year, he just wishes he had calmed down in the big moments. He was 42-13 on the year, and he is excited to see how he can transition into wrestling at college.
Koda Kuzma had a variety of thoughts about the tournament. She described the tournament as surreal, the experience was amazing and it was really cool seeing all of the famous wrestlers. This was not her first time, despite being a freshman. She went to states in middle school last year. She thought she performed well overall but she could have wrestled harder. She wished she was better conditioned and wasn’t so tired. She went into the tournament being 30-10, and her goals for the future include achieving an undefeated record and getting first at future tournaments. She said she will definitely be back next year.
Freshman Finley Fourspring also shared her thoughts on the event in Hershey. She spoke on being disqualified, saying that she didn’t make weight and all her matches were chalked down as a loss because of it. She detailed the tournament by saying she was very excited and it was really fun. She said she had participated in the tournament the last two years, both in middle school. She thought she performed well, and she said that she needed to be quicker on her feet and really wished she checked her weight beforehand. Her record going into this was 30-1. She also said that she wants to wrestle in college and potentially coach in her future, and she said she is hoping to place top three at states in the near future.
