On Saturday, January 25, Massachusetts General Hospital performed a unique surgery on Tim Andrews.
About a year ago Tim was on his way to kidney failure and was desperate to try anything. He was on a waiting list, but there are over 100,000 people on the list, most who still need a kidney, and others who die waiting.
Doctors did some research and thanks to a well known farm animal, he is back on his feet and better then ever. The doctors performed surgery on him and replaced his kidney with a pig kidney! He is 66 years old and only the second person living with a pig kidney.
The doctors are keeping a good eye on Tim, but he was able to return back home and is doing well. Before the surgery could even happen, Tim had to lose a lot of weight because the doctors were concerned his body wouldn’t be able to handle the kidney because months prior he had a heart attack.
About three months later Tim came back to the hospital and had lost 30 pounds. Tim is a walking, breathing miracle and lots of people hope he stays this way.
