This is the greatest band ever, no doubt. Steve Perry is easily the greatest vocalist of all time. He has the voice of an angel. The band also features the talents of Neal Schon (guitarist), Ross Valory (bass guitarist), Jonathan Cain (keyboardist / synthist), and Steve Smith (drummer). You can’t go wrong with any Journey song! I have never heard a bad Journey song; even regarding the ones that came out before Steve Perry joined the band. Many people classify a perfect album by one that has no bad or skip-able songs. Therefore, that makes Journey a perfect band! Even though I love every single one of their songs, I tried my best to rank 10 of my favorites below.
10. Edge of the Blade
This is probably the hardest Journey song. I love that ’80s synth sprinkled throughout the song, and that electric guitar is heavenly. As soon as the tone lightens a little bit, and you hear the part where Steve Perry sings, “You’re caught up in the power.” I get immediate chills. It is such a nice break from the heaviness of the song that gives Perry enough time to include his powerful vocals. I absolutely love this song.
9. Be Good to Yourself
I really love this song’s energy. It has a positive vibe that is consistent throughout its entirety; and it really just puts me in a good mood. It is one of the bands’ quicker paced songs, which proves that they could do more than just soft ballads. I mean, this song is kind of a ballad too I suppose; but it is definitely a heavier one with a beautiful guitar solo.
8. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)
This song highlights the perfection of every band member. This is by far the best representation of how powerful each and every one of them are. The opening synth, the rhythmic drums and bass, the purring guitar, and of course the smooth vocals all go together perfectly. This song was written to take advantage of every single instrument used in it. The music video is really fun and iconic too. This song is often favored by many Journey fans, both old and new.
7. Who’s Crying Now
The lyrics in this song are so beautiful and powerful: “One love feeds the fire, one heart burns desire, I wonder who’s crying now?” is genius. The song has such a powerful meaning. It’s nice and slow paced and has a nice long instrumental ending. It’s one of those songs that lets your emotions shine through its lyrics. While the song does have a story of sorts, it’s kind of left open ended (like many of Journey’s songs), which is why so many listeners relate to their lyrics.
6. Still They Ride
I love the soft playing piano in this song mixed with the subtle and sweet electric guitar. This is a very slow song that truly lets Perry’s voice take its time and beam with power. The finest way I can explain this song makes zero sense, but it seems to me that its sound has a hue of light.
5. Stone in Love
This is a great song. It is another one of Journey’s quicker songs, but still keeps its melodic chorus. The sound of this song is magic and powerful. The guitar solo is another piece of greatness that finishes the song in a beautiful and almost poetic way.
4. Faithfully
This song is the heart of the band, no doubt. I feel like the message that’s reoccurring is a “journey,” and it is the perfect representation of the band. I have heard this song a million times, and it still gives me chills years later. If you’re ever driving in a car late at night and this song comes on, you will feel such a vibe; and it’s simply the vibe of this band that you’re hearing. Both beauty and power mixed together.
3. Don’t Stop Believin’
Obviously, I’m going to include this one on the list. There is a reason that this is the most popular Journey song. Not only has it single-handedly introduced millions of people to the band, but it has managed to stay relevant over 40 years later. This song has been played at countless parties, dances and weddings. It is easily a soundtrack to so many people’s lives, and just about everybody knows it word for word. Just like “Faithfully,” the song never fails to give me chills. It is one of the few songs constantly played that I never get tired of. Every time it comes on, everybody better shut up while I turn up the volume.
2. Open Arms
This song will make a grown man cry. Whether or not you can relate to the lyrics, the song has such a powerful sound that it will have you feeling that type of way. This is one of Steve Perry’s greatest vocal performances: he sounds like a pure angel. Talking about this song from an instrumental perspective, this song is flawless.
1. Winds of March
This song doesn’t get enough love. It is such a slow paced, pretty song. The last third of the song gets surprisingly heavier too, with a nice fast guitar sound. I think this song is what really set the vibe for future Journey songs. It came out on the 1978 “Infinity” album, which was the first Journey album to feature Steve Perry’s vocals. I truly believe that this song helped put him on the map, and helped the band further decide the direction they wanted to take. It is a really beautiful song that needs way more recognition.
There are plenty more I wish I could have added to the list, like “Ask the Lonely”, “Only the Young”, “Suzanne”, and “Message of Love.” Really every Journey song is worthy to be in the top 10, but I think these 10 have got to be some of the band’s finest masterpieces that define their greatness. Listening to Journey is a journey, and throughout that journey you will come across wonderful songs that will speak to you. With that said, what are your top 10 Journey songs?
