Snow days are a great break for students, and they shouldn’t have to make them up. These days are called off because of dangerous weather, which means students’ safety is the priority. Forcing them to make up these days doesn’t seem fair, especially since the school made the decision to cancel to protect everyone. It’s not like they were skipping class for fun– weather can make traveling unsafe, and that should be respected.
Snow days also give students a much-needed mental break from the stress of school. Students and teachers both work hard, and these days off help recharge their batteries. Instead of adding extra days to the end of the year, schools should focus on quality learning rather than how many days are in a school year. Students are more likely to do well if they’re not constantly stressed about making up missed time.
Lastly, most schools already plan for a few missed days or even use remote learning. With technology today, it’s easy to keep lessons going without having to extend the year. Making students make up snow days just doesn’t make sense when schools already have ways to handle missed time. Allowing students to enjoy their break without worrying about extra school days would help them stay refreshed and focused.
