The importance of cows is often overlooked but here are some examples of a few of the many ways that cows are essential to our everyday lives:
Dairy is an important part of our diets because it is rich in essential vitamins and minerals like calcium. Our bodies need calcium in order to build and maintain strong bones. Calcium also ensures that our muscles, heart, and nerves are functioning properly.
Our main source of calcium generally comes from cows, considering that dairy is the number one source of calcium which is why dairy cows are so important.
Beef is a significant source of protein and is a staple in the majority of people’s diets around the world. Around 30% of America’s meat intake is beef, which is a pretty large amount considering the other meat options. Since so much beef is being consumed, it plays a large role in our protein intake and therefore supports a healthy immune system, helps build and maintain muscle, helps strengthen your bones, and so much more.
Cows produce natural fertilizers (manure) that improves the soil. Manure contains potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorous which are all essential for the growth of plants.
Many cows spend their days grazing in pastures. This may not seem like it would have much of an effect besides keeping the grass short, but by grazing on the vegetation they prevent the overgrowth of certain plants which helps support a wider range of plant species and animals in the area.
By producing meat and dairy products, cows are able to generate pretty large revenues and significantly support not only local economies, but national economies too.
