Nowadays, most or almost all teenagers are actively on social media. Celebrities especially are the ones that teens find interest in. There are both good things and bad things to this phenomenon.
Some celebrities sometimes put out good messages, but teens can also look at celebrities and believe that they lead a perfect life. This can cause teens to feel down about themselves. Little things like filters, cuts from a video, etc. can hide so much from a person’s life and the person behind the screen will think they know that persons whole life and it causes them to be jealous and insecure over things that aren’t in their control. This especially appeals to adolescents because they are still so young and don’t look at the bigger picture.
We also need to look at this with empathy for the celebrities making the post though. Due to them posting this “picture perfect” life people on the internet often assume that they go through nothing challenging. But then you have other celebrities that will show the rough parts of life, and I think that’s mainly what the crowd follows nowadays because they like real people. For example Emma Chamberlin created a big following with simply just being herself and being raw about everything she does. Alix Earl is another one who is real when it comes to covering her acne with a filter or makeup, and she opens up about her journey with acne and how she’s been struggling with it since high school.
To sum this up, we think that the people watching these celebrities “perfect lives” need to also remember that they are human and everyone is going through something, even if they don’t post that side of their lives. And the celebrities that are posting those parts of their life are helping teens and making teens feel heard and seen, which brings a great comfort.
