Star Wars and Marvel. These are both amazing franchises that have had huge impacts on the entertainment industry. Though they are in completely different universes, they both have one thing in common. They are now owned by Disney. Some believe that Disney has helped these franchises evolve and made them even greater than before. However, there are many who think that Disney has ruined them. Many find the more recent Star Wars films and shows to be obnoxious and filled with terrible writing and acting. The same goes for Marvel. So today, I am going to explain my thoughts on the subject and whether I think Disney has helped Star Wars and Marvel or not.
Star Wars has been around since 1977, and it was an astonishing sight to the people of that time. No one had ever seen anything like it before, and it changed cinema forever. The same can be said about Marvel. The original comics came out in 1939, and have continued to grow over the years. “Iron Man” was Marvel’s first official film, releasing in 2008. Both sagas have had a huge impact on its audiences and their worlds and characters will forever be remembered.
In 2012, Disney bought Star Wars from creator, George Lucas. This sent a huge wave of mixed emotions throughout the fanbase. Many were excited to see new creators, while others weren’t so sure. Disney created five Star Wars films over that time, and have created multiple TV shows as well. Two side-story films, “Solo”, and “Rogue One”, and the three sequel films were all created by Disney. While some loved these films, some did not find them as enjoyable as the originals. Many say that they believe that the saga started falling downhill once Disney bought it from Lucas, however, others may say that it just depends on the director and writers. There have been many successful films and shows created during Disney’s ownership of Star Wars, such as “The Force Awakens” and “The Mandalorian,” but there have also been ones that aren’t liked as much. “The Last Jedi” got a lot of hate from the fanbase, not enjoying Luke’s grumpy attitude or some of the way the characters were written. “The Acolyte” is a more recent show that Disney produced, and there were very few who seemed to actually enjoy it. I personally believe that the sequel series was fine. I actually enjoyed “The Last Jedi”, and thought the characters were pretty good. However, I never got into the shows. Every time I tried to watch one, I just couldn’t. So in a way, yes, Disney has ruined Star Wars. There is a lot of bad writing with cringey clichés that would have made the film or show better if they had been left out.
In 2009, Disney bought Marvel. Now, Disney owned Marvel a lot longer than they owned Star Wars, and they made the majority of their films. Most Marvel movies were created by Disney, and there are so many good films out there. However, in the more recent years, that has all gone downhill. Films such as “The Marvels”, “Thor: Love and Thunder”, and many others did not sit so well with the public. Many claimed that they pushed too much of a political agenda, and there weren’t any good stories. Some of the shows have gotten good reviews, such as “WandaVision” and “Loki,” while others like “She-Hulk,” and “Secret Invasion,” resulted in much hate from the fanbase. Personally, I love Marvel, however, recently I do believe that their movie-making has become sloppy. I only ever watched one Marvel show the whole way through and I actually enjoyed it. I was thoroughly interested in “WandaVision,” and really wanted a second season, but sadly didn’t get one.
Overall, I think it is just the change in generation. I believe that much agenda has been pushed by Disney over the last few years, and that results in sloppier stories and characters. I think that if all politics and controversial topics were just left out of these movies and shows, there would be greater results, and they would be able to make more money. I truly hope that both Marvel and Star Wars can get back up on their feet because they have made such an incredible legacy, and it makes me sad when I see such small amounts of effort being put into these amazing sagas.
