On Thursday, Corry’s Safeline counsel and Mrs. Audet will be volunteering to host a Child Grief Awareness. It starts as school begins and lasts all day to spread positive energy to many of those who are struggling. Our school has hosted one of these events for approximately eight years.
What this awareness does is highlight the Highmark Caring Place, a place for free resources for families who have grieved a deep loss. Safeline created this day to help children who are going through a rough time and need help with the person they have lost.
We really have to appreciate our helpers on the Safeline counsel. They help run this event and really take things seriously and are so helpful to everyone.
For this day students and staff are asked to wear blue. There are official shirts you can wear, too. Since the shirts have been sent out already, you can win them by a name drawn in lunch or they have a coloring contest with the middle school.
There are many activities that Safeline does to spread that awareness. They do things like going to the community and providing them a letter and flier so they can also get involved.
Since Safeline wants to spread awareness, there are now classrooms who are teaching lessons on what the awareness is about. Our school also does things like activities during lunch, recognizing students in need, coloring butterflies, and giveaways like bracelets with positive sayings. A favorites is the service dogs that come from Therapy Dogs United.
Some ways you can all help spread this is by putting it on social media or not being afraid to talk about our own loss and talk to a friend in need of help. This day is important because it is important we don’t ignore people’s feelings and to notice some students will suffer some kind of loss in their life and it’s good to have that conversation so you’re not stuck forever in that grief. We need to learn how to accept and offer support and acknowledge what others are doing to help you and to acknowledge that your feelings are valid and you will get through it.
