As of 2023, a cup called the “Stanley Cup” became extremely viral after a woman named Danielle shared a video of her car, which had caught fire. The only thing that had survived was the stanley cup. The woman showed the cup, which still had unmelted ice, and looked to be completely unharmed. The Stanley company offered Danielle a new Stanley cup and a new car, which caused Tik Tok’s views to skyrocket.
Shortly after this, people (mainly women) all over Tik Tok and social media started buying these tumblers, and Stanley quickly became a worldwide sensation. The company went from $70 million – 750 million, selling out their products faster than ever.
This started a bandwagon effect; people did not want to be left out. In fact, they would do whatever they could to get their hands on at least one of these cups. Problems quickly arose. People everywhere have been camping out at Target all night just to get their hands on one of these cups. For example, when the Valentine’s Day Stanley Tumbler came out, people were legitimately waiting outside Target in the cold. Inevitably, when the doors opened, people would storm in as fast as they could just to access these limited cups. It was “Black Friday” all over again.
It quickly became so bad that people would start fighting each other just to take one as their own. If I had to describe this whole thing in one sentence, I would say that it became an “If I can’t have it, no one should” example.
If you thought this is all, you would be wrong. People started buying so many of these cups that stores carrying the Stanley product had to put up signs that limited 20 cups to a customer (these cups are at least $35-50 at minimum)
After a year, this experience has not ended. Even though I own a Stanley myself, I am not that crazy over a cup. However, I do wonder how far people will go to be apart of the next big trend. How much will the next trend cause people to go crazy over it?
