Growing up I loved watching musicals. They were, and still are, one of my favorite movie genres to watch. The music is super catchy, the dance is mesmerizing to watch, and the acting is usually really good. I would say the best time to watch them would be anytime during the year. They have musicals for any season. These rankings are in no particular order.
- “The Phantom Of The Opera”- The Phantom Of The Opera is one of my favorite musicals. The music is amazing, and the actors voices are beautiful. There is a good message that the musical sends out to the audience. The message is that love cannot be forced. If you haven’t watched this musical, I definitely recommend it.
- “West Side Story” (2021)- I recently watched this one, and it instantly became one of my favorites. There are a lot of political topics that are talked about in this musical. For example, racial unrest, urban gang violence, immigration, altercations with the police, etc. I also really enjoy the music. Some of it is in Spanish, and some in English. The majority of the music is upbeat, but some of it is kind of on the slower side. The vocals are beautiful, and you can hear the emotion they are feeling in the songs.
- “The Sound Of Music”- I grew up watching this musical. It was one of my favorites growing up. The music is super upbeat, and very catchy. This one is pretty political. It takes place during the time of World War II, and it talks a lot about the Nazis and Hitler, especially towards the end. This is probably the most widely known musical that is on this list. Even people who don’t really watch musicals at least know about this one.
- “Newsies” – This musical is definitely in my top three favorite musicals. The music is amazing, and the dance numbers are phenomenal. In this musical a bunch of guys, selling newspapers, go on strike because the prices were raised. They were fighting for fair wages. This is the musical that I can watch over and over again, and never get tired of it.
- “Hairspray” – This is another one that I grew up watching. The music is pretty upbeat, and really catchy. I don’t really watch this one often. I would say it’s probably one of my least favorite ones on the list, but I at least try to watch it once a year. I would say my favorite version of this one is the one with Dove Cameron, and Ariana Grande in it.
- “Wicked” – I absolutely love this musical. It is one of my favorites for sure, maybe even my overall favorite. The music is amazing, and I could just listen to it over and over again. I grew up loving this musical. I am so glad that I got to see it on Broadway. It’s even better in person. This is another musical I could watch over and over again. I am very excited for the movie to come out, and I can’t wait to go see it in theaters.
- “Hamilton” – I would say this is probably the most popular in the list. When people think of musicals this is usually the first one that comes to mind. This one has really good music as well. I like the fact that this one is mainly music, and less lines. This is one of the musicals that I watch all the time. I would say that if you are just getting into musicals, this is probably the first one you’ll watch.
- “Mary Poppins” – I grew up watching this one as well. I loved watching this one when I was little. I love both versions, but I like the original one the most. The music for this one is also pretty upbeat. My favorite version will always be the one where Julie Andrews was Mary Poppins.
- “Beetlejuice” – I love the original movie, and when they made it a musical I got really excited. I watched it, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I really like the music from it. I don’t watch this one often, but I do listen to the music quite a bit.
- “Little Shop of Horrors” – This one I tend to watch during Halloween time. I make sure I watch it at least once a year during that time. The music is all right, the only ones that really stick out to me are, “Feed Me (Git It!), “Suddenly Seymour,” and “Skid Row (Downtown).” I would say those are really the only ones I listen to, unless I’m watching the entire movie. I feel like this one can be a little boring, but overall I still enjoy it.
